He’s fallen so far and so hard. It’s left bruises that will color his skin for eternity, bloodstains on his blade he can’t ever hope to wash away.
There’s a girl that smiles gleefully at him and threads flowers into his hair. It helps, and she helps, because this is someone who’s so young and untainted, so unlike anyone he’s ever met. She reminds him of no one, and so she can’t ever bring to mind someone he’s hurt.
She is hurt now, though. Hurt by claw, restored by sword, and while his own wounds may have healed, she has but one chance at life left before time stops for her, for her master, and for Kohaku as well.
His heart continues to beat, in time with the shard on his back. It’s the scar on his conscience that hurts the most.
But her presence assuages it, makes everything turn from black to pure; one small smile helps and heals.
His tainted life is prolonged, but if it’d make her less sad or less likely to be hurt, he’d lay it down.
He’d follow her to Hell again.
