This is long so I'm cutting to save friends lists.
Where do I begin? How about on Thursday. I left work early on Thursday to head home and get to baking the Viking pancakes. I pretty much spent the afternoon and early evening getting several pans of the cakes made. I’m glad I did since I did not know at the time that Saturday would bring so many people.
Friday morning it was out of bed early, head to Dad’s house to pick up the bread for the tavern, and head down to Fuqua Varina to meet people at the storage shed. On the way to the shed, I realized that I forgot to buy bread at Sams for the lunch on Saturday. Ooops! While at the shed, I was informed that there was a Sams on the way to site so I decided to stop there on my way. We left the storage shed place with 2 very loaded trucks and 2 very loaded cars. We literally emptied the shed of its contents. So on the way to site, I loaded up on bags of bread, about 14 actually and got some interesting stares by people watching me load all that bread into the cart.
I got to site and had everything ready to unload when the gang from Goldsboro arrived to help me. The rest of the day went pretty smooth. I got the sausage stew on the stove along with the apples and cabbage. Unfortunately, I burned one of the pots of apples and had to begin another pot. I’m glad that I bought the 48 pounds of apples that I did. At the end of the event, I did not have any applesauce left. The tavern went well and people raved about the sausage stew. I think people were more than satisfied when they left for the evening. I was called into court to accept the Seneschal position for Kappellenberg. I was in bed by 10:00 and up the next day at 7:30.
Prep work went well in the morning but I was getting worried about not getting the soups on the stove in time for me to go to court which didn’t happen when I had to leave. I was waiting at court to do the seneschal thing for our new baron and baroness when I made someone go back to the kitchen to check on the soups and they came back to give me a report that all was well and the soups were on and bubbling away. I felt much better then. After court it was back to the kitchen to get stuff packed into a truck to be taken to the pavilion for lunch to be served.
Once everything was set up and the soups were ready to be served, it was about 12:45. A line had formed about 15 minutes prior to that so I knew people were hungry. The line was so long it went down the middle of the pavilion, out past the pig cooker and down the road a bit. The line stayed that long and did not dwindle until nearly 2:45, 2 hours after the line started. I have never seen so many people line up like that and have the line last that long anytime in the past few years I have been working on meals. I heard from people later that evening and the next morning that people were raving about the beef stew and the garlic cheese I made. Yeah! Happy People.
When lunch was over, I was tired but I was so happy to have fed that many people and made them very contented. This is my goal in life, to feed as many people as I can. We estimated I fed about 550 people that afternoon. Wow! The rest of the day was pretty quiet once the lunch was cleaned up. I went to court and sat next to
lady_guenievre and friends. I was bundled up pretty good but by the end of the court, I was getting pretty cold. I wanted to stay and see the ceremony for Alaric which was unfortunately the very last business of the court.
After court, I went and had dinner in the fish all with
spacemanj and lots of company. The food was really good and I really needed something hot to warm me up after sitting in the cold for so long. After dinner I headed back to the feast hall to talk with some people and I caught up with Baron Wulfston and friends who were raving about the stew and he told me several people he talked to were quite happy with the lunch as well. I talked with Gracie for a while about food and feasts and sources so I’m defanetly contacting her for advice when I do my next feast. She is so passionate about food so it was really cool to talk with her about it.
Bed was early again and again I was up with the sun. Had an enjoyable breakfast done by
ladyhelwynn. I talked with Master Robear for a bit and Robear was saying the reason that there were so many people at lunch was that the people knew who I was and knew that I did really good food, thus the amount of people wanting to eat lunch. He said that everyone he talked to on the field absolutely loved the lunch and that I did a great job on it. Yeah! Again, Happy People.
I was asked by Alaric later in the day if I was interested in doing the Ymir feast for next year. I definitely need to think about it. I’m pretty sure that I should be ready by next year to do a feast as big as Ymir. Packing up went pretty well. We were mostly off site by 1:00. Stopped for lunch which I think we all needed. Nurishment is always a good thing. Went down to the shed and had everything unloaded. One thing I noticed unfortunately, was that we were missing some pots. I think the big 5 gallon pot and a couple of the others may have stayed at site. I can’t remember how many Idonea had bought some time ago so I need to get up with her and find out so that those going back to site to retrieve our wayward pots know how many are ours. I think the next time I’m at the shed, we need to better mark the pots so they don’t go traveling again.
I got home around 6:00 and just completely crashed. I was so tired. It took me a couple of days and some early bed times to feel like I’m back to normal again. Over all though, I thoroughly enjoyed the cooking and all the people I fed. It was good to catch up with old friends though all too brief so hopefully I’ll be able to relax at the next event and just enjoy it for once. I am really looking forward to going to Coronation. It is going to be a lot of fun!
