Also, My friend Meredith asked me for book recommendations of stuff I like. I already gave her Sabriel ( who she passed on to her neice) Here is what I recommended.. Just because I like to hear opinions on my semi book reviews..
OK, here goes!
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
That is the first book in the Percy Jackson series.I think your niece may really like these. They are an easy read (you'll breeze through them in 2 or 3 days of leisurely reading) It is all the Greek gods in modern times and is a fun frolic... Percy is half harry Potter, half Peter Parker. He is a cocky teenager who always keeps his sense of humor while being chased by minotaurs and such.
The Graveyard Book By Neil Gaiman
This is The Jungle Book re imagined. Instead of a boy being raised by wolves in the Jungle, It is the story of Bod (short for Nobody) who is raised in a cemetery by ghosts. It's a little less linear than most stories, but it has just won a butt load of awards and Audio Book of the year (which Neil narrates). It will make you cry for certain. If your niece hasn't read this already, she will really like it as well..
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
As you can tell, I am a huge Neil Gaiman fangirly. This book is a bit more adult so its more for you than her right now. It is about a guy named Shadow, who gets out of prison 3 days early to discover his past life is completely gone. He gets hired by a man named Wednesday and takes part in the war between the old Gods (Norse mythology, Greek Mythology, Hindu Mythology and even Irish myths) and the New Gods (Television, the internet, Mini-malls). It is a really great book with fantastic characters. I am listening to it now on audio book for a second time. It has a "sequel" Called Anansi Boys, but American Gods is a better place to start..
Neil also wrote a children's story called "Prayer for a Blueberry Girl" which he wrote for Tori Amos' daughter. It is a very cute little picture book and if you are in a bookstore, mosey on by the children's section and take a look. It really is very sweet...
Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett
When People ask me what my favorite book is, I always say Sabriel. When they ask my who my favorite author is, i say Terry Pratchett.
This is the book I introduce people to Pratchett with. He has an overwhelming body of work (over 30 Disc world Books) and this is my way in. Discworld is a flat world that sits on the back of four elephants who sit on the back of a giant turtle who flies through space. It is a world with so many different characters and Pratchetts books discuss a lot of different groups. Wee Free Men is a Tiffany Aching Book which is a sub group of the Witches series. This is also a series your niece would enjoy.
Tiffany is a farm girl who lives on the Chalk. She makes cheese and helps her family. When her little brother goes missing, Tiffany is the only one who can see that the Queen of the Fairies is the one who took him. She sets out to get him, entering the realm of fairies, which is not a friendly place. She gets help form the Nac Mac Feegle or the "Wee Free Men" tiny blue-tattooed Pictsies who speak in Scottish brogues and want to drink, fight and steal. They will keep you laughing through this adventure as Tiffany forges on to save her brother with nothing but an Iron frying pan for a weapon. Tiffany is truly one of the best heroines, flawed and imperfect but true at heart. There are two more Tiffany Aching books, A Hat full of Sky and The Wintersmith. Both are equally as great. Keep an eye out for a Cameo by one of my favorite witches in Pratchetts series, Granny Weatherwax..
Also, once you have familiarized yourself with both Gaiman and Pratchett, they wrote a book together!!!!! It's called Good Omens and is about the end of the world. It is also a great find.
Whew... I sure can talk when it comes to books...
.
That is it for now... Matty leaves this week and I am looking forward to Capoeira and training my dog to not be annoying...
