update on the bird

You're all going to be sick of birds by the time I'm done. LOL

I went out on my deck tonight to water the plants and took the three furballs with me. I simply just walked out and I hear a loud thud and guess who was sitting there giving me the evil eye on the garage right next to my deck?

Ok that's one saying falcon and one saying hawk.

I'm keeping score :)

Either way, it is cool!

I agree with Jacqueline... Looking at the pic here: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Coopers_Hawk_dtl.html of the juvenile... *nods* Looks like what you've got! How cool to have one ON YOUR PORCH! OMG I would be so fangirl squeeing if it didn't scare the birds away... I never see predator birds so close...

I thought you guys would enjoy the big scary bird... and for sure be able to tell me what you thought it was. It does look a LOT like that Coopers. I always thought Hawk's were even bigger than that though.

It's so weird to see these in the city. I didn't know that they lived here.

Scary, scary claws on those things! I wouldn't want to piss off his parents!

I love all birds, especially song birds, but definitely the big scray birds are awesome... ^_^

That Cornell website is the best place we've found for identifying birds; of course we always follow it up with a Google Image search, because often there is a lot of variation with a species and yours might not look like what the book shows... (For example, a lot of the pics in our books show the indigo bunting very bright blue, but on the first day it showed up, it was rainy and he was much more black than blue...)

That's amazing. Do you have squirrels or chipmunks in your neighborhood? I was thinking that they're also stalking small prey.

Near my school there are some trees that falcons nest in. Every so often I'll see them perched on our fence or on the playground. Once I saw one walking around looking at the ground like a chicken.

Don't be grossed out if you find skeletons of dead little things in your yard. I find them sometimes near my classroom because they'll catch something and use my classroom roof as a dining table, then their leftovers end up on the ground.

Well we did have a lot of squirrels... I imagine with those things around we wont have many left!

Do you think this thing is a falcon?

I'm not sure. Judging by it's size I'm leaning towards a type of hawk, but I'm definitely not the one to ask. It's hard to tell from the close up of the juvenile because young birds often look different than the official pictures of their species.

I think it's rounder. Just looking back at those other photos I posted. But the falcon and the hawk can look so similar, it's really hard to know.
