[Japan bumps the journal while he's working and it turns on, showing him at a table, concentrating hard on something. Instead of his usual kimono, he's wearing just a plain white t-shirt and has a white hachimaki tied around his forehead. Scattered all over the desk are electronic parts, illuminated by a single desk lamp, in various stages of

Ah, Mr. Japan. ... Those were circuit boards, correct? [Ancient though they may be...]
Are you perhaps trying your hand at making the "television" device for Mr. Poland, then? [Robert has to give him credit for trying, even if it's unlikely that the parts will be easy to find.]
I would have wished to assist you if you found it troublesome. Though if it is physically demanding, I would likely not be much in the way of help. [Because Robert is a wimp.]

Yes, you are correct on both counts, Hastings-san.
Ah...you needn't trouble yourself. I am merely trying to do some of the more detailed work.

It is hardly a troubling thing to assist a fellow intellectual in creating technology. On the contrary, I was very enthusiastic to see your work. However, if it is not something you wish to broadcast, that is perfectly acceptable as well.

At any rate, though, I would much like to see the progress you have made so far, if that is not troublesome for you. [Robert is even considering actually going over to where Japan is and watching in person if Japan doesn't want to broadcast it.]

[He turns on the video a few minutes later and all the parts are extremely neatly arranged on the desk.]

I would imagine. The technology here is... limited, to say the least. [Robert would describe it as archaic...] But that only makes your attempt more admirable.
The end result... what sort of properties should it have, if all goes well?

Mostly Robert's just curious to see a bona fide television one of these days.]
Does the television pick up signals in any specific way, or is it fed information from some sort of database?

...
I apologize for the lack of technological progress.
[He pulls the camera away from the parts on the desk and bows his head.]
It is a digital feed, although the lack of a satellite system here will make...receiving signal difficult.
