They actually grow in a few places in Seattle, if you'd believe. Semi hard shell around delicate tranlucent white flesh and eerily shiny pretty seeds. I *adore* lychees. (And lychee smoothies with lychee jelly have gotten me through five hours stretches of training more than once.)
Though... at least one person I know says they just taste sweet, nothin else. (They remind me a little of a very delicate blackberry honey. But fresher.)
Lychee is really really good!!!! If you have an asian or an epicurian mart nearby, then you can get them canned or fresh-frozen. They're awesome!!!!!!! Lychee gum is pretty good (but quite sweet), lychee boba drinks are a very good, and lychee ice cream rocks!
Also try mangostein, rambutan, jack fruit, and durian! Very very good!!
It's supposed to be a very tasty, very stinky plant. Anthony Bourdain wrote, when he first tried it, that it had the faintest taste of well aged cheese, and that someday some chef in New York would harness its power ... if they could find some way of transporting it safely. Ten layers of saran wrap or something.
Me, I have memories of clearing out of one side of the house as my parents gleefully ate jackfruit. Durian is supposed to smell FAR FAR WORSE.

It's a really custard-y fruit, and almost imposibble to describe, it does'nt taste like anything else. But it's yummy!
