Stein did a double take. Was that the filth he'd tell the kids? Did Shinigami realize what would happen if they ever found Kid? Unless ...the reaper really was planning on taking care of that 'problem'.

"What?" Black Star was the first to speak, stepping forward. "What did you just say?"

The god towered over them, giving no reply. Liz had immediately stopped crying, frozen with Shinigami's words. Patti's cheerful grin erased from her face, leaving no evidence it was even there. Soul and Maka only widened their eyes in shock, not truly wanting to believe what they just heard. As for Tsubaki, all she did was cover her mouth with her hand, and glanced frantically to Black Star.

The teen had moved towards Shinigami, glowering up at him. Kid was dead? Something told him it wasn't true, that this was another of the goofy god's sick jokes. But another part of him felt it wasn't. If Noah really did take Kid again, what protection could the teen have? He was human, he was fragile. Killing him within an instant would have been no problem to someone like Noah, who had captured Kid before, even with his powers.

"Shinigami-sama..." Stein murmured. It was his job as one of Shinigami's alliances to follow the god's lead; Stein didn't even want to know what would happen if he didn't play along. "Are you serious? Why didn't you tell me earlier...?" The top meister could only hope his act was as convincing as the devious god before him.

"H-How do you know?" Liz wailed again, her shock wearing off. "Kid can't be dead! We were just with him! Something like that --" Her voice broke, and she clung on to her sister next to her. "No... He c-can't be..." The demon gun's voice rose and fell in pitch, making her less coherent. Patti held her older sister fondly; a part of her wanted to bawl, too, if it weren't for the fact that she had to be strong for Liz.

"I'm sorry, Liz, Patti," Shinigami sighed, quite convincingly. He raised his huge hands again, enveloping the others in a heartfelt circle. "I'm sorry, everyone."

The two demon guns let themselves be swallowed by Shinigami's black form; Maka, Soul, and Tsubaki allowed the god to pull them closer as well. When the ninja had avoided his touch, Shiniami raised his head slowly.

"Is something wrong, Black Star?" his words were concerned, yet, surprisingly cold. The said teen backed up some more.

"No."

"Alright, then come here. ~" Shinigami challenged, still holding onto the students beneath him. He raised his right hand from Maka's small back, sticking it out to Black Star. "If nothing's wrong, then come here."

The hard edge in his tone made Stein wonder why none of the other students seemed to notice it, besides Black Star. As of now, they had been wound in tight lies and hidden truths; maybe Shinigami had already brainwashed them to his advantage.

"No." Stein inwardly smirked, nodding at Black Star's courage. If the ninja knew Shinigami's plan, he could probably stop it. He himself, however, wasn't in any position to make a move. "You... Kid isn't really dead, is he?"

Shinigami stared at the boy eerily, as the other students gradually lifted their heads, turning to face Black Star as well. "What are you saying Black Star?" The god replied innocently, tilting his head to the side. He was a great actor when he wanted to be.

"SHUT UP!" Shouting, Black Star stabbed his finger in Shinigami's direction, clenching his other fist. "You're lying! You have to be!"

Gliding towards the accusing boy, Shinigami bent forward, facing him directly. "Black Star, you should know I'd never lie about such a thing. I love Kid more than anything in this world." He pressed forward a bit; the meister had no choice but to stare into the black abyss of Shinigami's eyes. What he said almost convinced him. Almost.

"Black Star! What are you doing?" Maka stepped around the reaper, pulling on the other meister's arm. "How could you say something like that?" The rest of the group drifted over, and Liz was frowning through her tears.

"No one wants to believe it Black Star!" she whined. "But it's the truth! We..." The weapon wiped furiously at her eyes. "We just have to face it!" Liz squeaked, and Patti rubbed her back soothingly.

"Ne, Black Star," the usually loud weapon spoke in a frighteningly low voice. "Don't you dare make one of us say it again." She glared at him from under her bangs; her icy blue eyes sent chills throughout his body.

"But --"

"Stop it, dude," Soul commanded, his lazy eyes now a fierce red. "It's over and done. All we can do is kick that guy's ass."

Black Star stiffened, noticing all the cold stares he was receiving. Even from Tsubaki. He glanced back to Shinigami, who was still floating in front of him. Why did they just believe what he said? Black Star peered over Tsubaki's shoulder, at Stein, who appeared disengaged from the conversation.

"It's alright, Black Star. I know you're just upset; that's to be expected." Shinigami sighed lightly, shrugging. "But Kid is gone. Forever. The only thing you guys can do is follow my orders, and in no time we will catch Noah and his gang."

Black Star widened his eyes in disgust, shaking his head. His friends still glared at him, as if it were his fault. All of them, even Tsubaki, were like followers to Shinigami. Minions. Servants. Pawns. Bait. Stein eyed him carefully as he made his own analysis.

Stepping backward, Black Star whispered, "I don't even know what to believe anymore..." Before anyone could reply, he ran off from the Death Room, causing Tsubaki to sigh knowingly.

"Shinigami-sama, should we go after him...?" Maka offered, already reaching for Soul.

"No, no, of course not. He's just confused now. ~" The reaper waved it off, as if it were a casual matter. "I'm sure Black Star just needs to be alone for a while. Besides, I have something for you kids to do."

Gazing up at their god, the teens waited patiently for his instructions.

"I need you to check out a certain area for me..."

Kid. Dead. No, those two words didn't even belong in the same sentence. But, his name is 'Death' the Kid. Black Star chuckled darkly at the irony. He had stormed off a while ago, and was now walking around aimlessly in the streets of Death City. The teen let a deep breath escape from his lips. His friends. They were probably right. Maybe Kid really was... No. That couldn't be. Something just seemed off about Shinigami.

Black Star furrowed his eyebrows, pondering in his thoughts, almost knocking over a small boy. "Hey! Watch it!" the raven-haired child yelped.

Blinking himself back to reality, the ninja muttered, "Oh, uh, sorry. I didn't see you..." He peered down, observing the short kid. The boy's hair was a disarrayed mess, his pale skin really brought out his bright purple eyes. Black Star knew he had never actually met the boy, but there was something familiar about him. "Er... Do I know you?"

"Tch. Nope," he smiled devilishly. "Well, I gotta go now. Heh, see you later."

Puzzled, Black Star didn't get a chance to ask what the child had meant by that, he was only able to watch him run off into the alley. Black Star could have caught up with him if he wanted, but a mysterious little boy was the least of his worries.

Retreating to his mind once more, Black Star tried to find out if there were any other differences in Shinigami's behavior. The first, the not really noticeable one, was when Shinigami had first sent him on that mission to retrieve Kid. The reaper hadn't seemed like he even cared if Kid was there or not. The second, but maybe this was only on Kid's behalf, was the way Kid acted towards his beloved 'chichue' when he had returned. The third ...was when Shinigami had acted carefree when they first went into the Death Room that morning... The god had seemed like nothing was wrong; but then once Liz told him Kid was missing, he suddenly turned all dark and gloomy, telling them Kid was 'dead'.

Black Star frowned, trying to fit the pieces together, but none of it added up. It's not as if Shinigami had mood swings or something. At least, he hoped that could be the case. What was Shinigami thinking?

Letting out a deep groan, the ninja pulled at his spiky hair. This was too much for him to figure out by himself. If only Tsubaki... No, she was as convinced as the others that Kid was gone for good. Black Star gazed up at the setting sun, and knew at that moment, that he was on his own.

A chilly wind blew throughout the cramped room, causing Kid to shiver, pulling the thin sheet around him closer. It must have been fate that wanted him to wake up though, as the sunlight started to peek into the cold room. Grumbling something about 'no sleep', Kid sat up and rubbed at his tired eyes. He blinked hazily around the room, remembering the night before.

Noah had brought him back to the first church, telling him that the other church had been a decoy, just in case someone was following them. Walking back inside the Victorian building had brought a load of memories flooding his mind. All the days and nights he had spent in there, how naive he had been. Noah just made everything clear for him, patching up all the lies and holes of the secrets Shibusen and Shinigami held.

Stumbling out of bed, Kid made his way over to the small book shelf in his room. His clothes had been folded neatly on top, in mint condition. Chuckling at the effort Justin made to keep his clothes perfectly clean, he changed and slipped on his Vans again. They weren't slip-ons, they were sneakers. Kid was just being lazy, leaving them tied to he could just slide his feet into them. Humans were careless most of the time anyway.

Once he knew he was ready to face the world - well, the unique people waiting in the other room - Kid creaked open his door, stepping into the main hallway. He had heard their laughter when he woke up, realizing they were in the 'main' room. That was where the wide mahogany table stayed, with an array of different chairs pulled up next to it. There was a couch near the back wall, sitting three. Usually though, it was either none or two. The two that occupied it the most were Giriko and Justin. Kid smirked.

Reaching the door to his destination, he pushed it open in a swift motion. Noah sat at the table, reading a newspaper as any man would on a typical Sunday. The other two, Justin and Giriko, much to Kid's amusement, were on the couch. Just as he thought.

"Morning, Kid," Noah stated simply, not taking his eyes off the paper. He took a long sip of his coffee.

"Good morning... Noah," The teen crossed over to the table, and after a moment, sat down. He glanced curiously at the man across from him, wondering what to do next.

"You seem rather shy today," the collector commented, lowering his paper. "Are you alright?" This was more of a threat then a concern.

"Of course." The reply was quick, as what is to be expected. Kid knew even the slightest misinterpretation could tick Noah off, so he had to watch his words carefully.

"Then don't just sit there," Noah sighed, pulling the paper back up. He waved a hand to Justin and Giriko. "Have them take you out to eat."

"Huh? Why me?" Giriko grumbled, taking a swig of his beer. Being bothered to go out so early in the morning...

"He said both of us," the priest next to him stood up, stretching out. "I'm starting to get hungry anyway. Get up." Ignoring the other's protests, Justin walked over to Kid, setting his hands on his hips. "Do you know what you want to eat, Kid-kun?"

"Uh..."

"Are you even hungry, Kid?" Giriko snorted, appearing behind Justin. "'Cause we ain't gotta go if you don't want to." It sounded more as if he didn't want to go.

"Nonsense," a deep voice gained the attention of all three. "You better feed him; if you don't --" Noah turned directly towards Giriko, staring at him hard. "You know what will happen."

"Tch. Threatenin' me and stuff..." The weapon mumbled, sulking.

"Anyway," Justin pulled Kid up gently by his arm. "Let's go find something." He turned to Noah momentarily. "Are you sure you don't want to come...?"

"Justin, you know better than anyone what I have to take care of." Something dark twisted in with his words. Kid furrowed his eyebrows, glancing up to meet Noah's eyes. He quickly looked away.

"Kid," The said teen didn't move, he just stared at his shoes. "I'm talking to you, Kid." Eventually looking up again, Kid trembled slightly as Noah stood over him.

"Y-Yes?"

The collector raised his arm, but Kid didn't flinch. He had a feeling he didn't have to. Noah brought down his hand on Kid's hair, ruffling it. "You better eat something healthy. No junk food, alright?"

Something inside Kid flitted, but he wasn't sure what. Then again, it didn't matter at the moment. "...I will."
