The Earthsea Quartet, by Ursula LeGuin. Fantastic! I'm reluctant to read fantasy but when I do I seem to enjoy it.

I seem to have the same mental block about fantasy as you do.

I think it's because there is a lot of fantasy that's pure adventure without a lot of depth. But there are some real gems in the genre.

She has a really great set of short stories that I just re-read this week: The Birthday of the World and Other Stories.
