Clearly you and those Magyars should take more care when naming your ancient cities so they're not so confusing.

I've been looking into the Budapest semesters in mathematics program and the other day my mom made some comment about me considering studying in Romania. She quickly realized that was wrong, but could not remember what country Budapest was actually in...

Welcome aboard! I have been a European citizen for 21 years now, so I guess I am one of the reasons why you said most of you.

I am afraid to admit that back in grade 6 in a geography quiz I, too, swapped Bucharest and Budapest as capital of Hungary and Romania. In Spanish, the names sounds very similar: Hungría/Rumanía, Bucarest/Budapest.

21 years?! I didn't know you were in the EU for so long. Romania was still a communist country at that time. Oh well, good for you...

I suppose the two names sound so similar only when translated into the same language, because if you say Bucharest in Romanian (which would be Bucuresti)and Budapest in Hungarian (with that specific accent) you can easily tell them apart.

Then, again, I'm mostly complaining about this appearing on TV and in newspapers so often. There is definitely no excuse, as they call themselves 'professionals'.

I'm a Russian citizen, does that count? It certainly counts enough to give me hell on college applications (I have an empty residency form sitting here in front of me).

Happy 2007 to you too (I haven't gotten around to saying so on eljay, and I frankly think it's too late now, unless I'm going for the Russian from-before-the-normal-calendar holiday).

Don't you celebrate winter holidays after the old calendar as well?
