Through the eyes of the Pharaoh
Chapter 1
Once upon a time in Ancient Egypt, there were two regions namely Upper and Lower Egypt. The reason for the split was a story that is always told to Egyptian children -passing through generations and generations- about The Scorpion King.
In 3067 BC, the Scorpion King led his army on a campaign to conquer the world. Seven years later, the Scorpion King and his army were defeated and exiled to the desert of Ahm Sher. His men died of heat exhaustion, leaving only the Scorpion King. Vowing to give Anubis his soul for the power to defeat his enemies, an oasis was created to hide the Scorpion King's pyramid and giving him a legion of humanoid jackal warriors to seek revenge. The Army of Anubis swept across Egypt, destroying everything in its path, but once their task was finished Anubis claimed the Scorpion King's soul and his army.
This caused a lot of chaos, but despite that, the people tried to restore the country. However, in the midst of this, many political problems surfaced and some lusted for power, leading yet into another war which caused the dividing of Egypt.
To the north was Lower Egypt where the Nile stretched out with its several branches to form the Nile Delta and the main city was Memphis. To the south was Upper Egypt, stretching to Syene with main city, Thebes. There were a lot of differences between Upper and Lower Egyptians. They spoke different dialects and had different customs thus creating differences and occasional tensions. The pharaohs who were known as the rulers of the Two Lands had either to make a compromise or start a war. But it seems like fate had decided its own way to change things…
Thebes: crown jewel of Pharaoh Seti the First, the land of reeds in 1290 BC. The sun was bristling with heat, the top of the pyramids shined and sweat was dripping from Egyptian men’s bodies as they worked their way up, making the soon to be king’s statue. It was almost noon, and the weather was starting to become unbearable for almost everyone. At the other side of the palace, women could be seen holding baskets above their heads, with various fruits inside, heading towards the main gate of the ‘Great House’ to prepare the mid-day meal of the pharaoh and the royals.
Meanwhile, inside the palace, loud voices could be heard in the columned hall coming from the audience hall where the king assembled his advisers and officers of state and decided on matters of state and religion.
“Yunho, that’s enough!” The Pharaoh’s authoritative voice boomed in the hallway.
“But father, I need to know-I have to know!” Soon to be king, Yunho, looked at his father, his expression grim. Everyone in the room was silent; a fight between the pharaoh and his son is not something they want to interfere with.
“Yunho, you heard the pharaoh.” Yunho’s cousin, a royal, Changmin tried to silence his friend and relative before he could anger the king more.
“No,” Yunho turned to glare at Changmin, “Why am I the only left out? I am the prince for god’s sake! I demand to know.”
“Enough is enough, Yunho!” This time, it was high priest Yoochun who tried to stop the young man from blurting any more nonsense. He was talking with the Great Pharaoh, not arguing with some old friend.
The palace’s royal official was still silent throughout the whole conversation.
Yunho’s arms flexed as he crossed them and frowned at his two friends for not supporting him. They knew too, what was happening to the kingdom, but they kept their mouths shut for some reason.
The king was quiet, his head kept down, his appearance becoming scarier second by second.
Changmin and Yoochun looked at each other worriedly. Things were getting out of hand, but the prince must not know what is happening at all costs. The Pharaoh had confronted them about the fact that Yunho does not need to have knowledge of the country’s situation. It was an intuition, as the Pharaoh had said that Yunho might act on impulse. His young blood boiled for battle and Seti the first was not about to send his son to war. Too bad Yunho wouldn’t understand his protective fatherly instincts.
“Fine, so be it.”
The Pharaoh looked up at that. His son was giving up, so easily?
“I will leave and let you have your ‘meeting’, but please give me a chance and tell me when the right time comes. I feel useless to your eyes, Pharaoh.”
Ah, those sweet, sweet words. Of course, his soon to be descendant had something up his sleeve.
Seti the first observed his son for a few seconds before he nodded. As if on cue, Yunho immediately left the audience hall.
Or so they thought.
Instead of leaving, Yunho went down the hallway that connected the audience hall and the columned hall, only to hide inside the said room from where he could still hear the voices. A minute of silence passed before the Pharaoh’s loud voice was resonating through the rooms once again.
Yunho nibbled his bottom lip, waiting for the king to spill out the details. He is not a person to eavesdrop, but the conditions made him so. He is not stupid, yes he can be pretty dense as Changmin always says, but still…there is something serious going on that he does not know of. And then, his father said it, war. According to his father, Memphis’s king Ahhotep died and his high priest Imhotep took the position as the new Pharaoh. The problem is that Imhotep keeps causing distress and wants to be the only ruler of Egypt despite the tradition, of all these years that their ancestors built up about the country being divided in two regions.
“So that’s it…” Yunho whispered to himself. “Wait a second…”
Ahhotep had a son! A son old enough to rule; what happened to him? Yunho wondered inside his mind. There is no way a young blood like Yunho would want war. That means Imhotep took the prince’s position by force because he wanted to create war so he could win and rule all Egypt. But why his father didn’t act upon it yet? The correct decision could save many lives. The troops are already getting ready…there is no way his father would want war to happen too…?
“Oh fuck.” Yunho’s fist met with the painted wall; the handsome man venting on it, trying to hold in his protests. His brain worked overdrive, trying to think of all the possibilities. Could Memphis’s originally to be king be dead?
Well, there is only one way to find out. And Yunho decided. He would go and find the beautiful one who chooses.
The same night, Yunho made a plan and when he was sure everyone in the palace was sleeping, he took action. With a cloak to hide his true identity, he quickly found his personal horse -despite everything being pitch black- and rode away, not caring what his father would think of him tomorrow.
His journey to Memphis was really long and even though he started ‘early’, when he reached the city, it was almost dawn. The weather had been cold and moist during the night and his trip through desert was not only unpleasant but really tired him out more than he expected to. However, Yunho did not give up. With his exceptionally good skills, he passed the armed guards of the palace and tried to locate the royal quarters. In his haste to find the prince, he did not notice that the morn was nearing and the daylight would soon reveal that there is an intruder inside the palace.
Just when he was sure, he was successful -walking on a quiet hallway with golden walls and detailed paintings- out of nowhere soldiers appeared and Yunho had no other choice, but to burst into an unknown room. When he got in, he was surprised by two things. One, he somehow made it safely and there was no danger in the room. Two, there is some kind of different danger here, if you count around fifteen females as danger of course. From all the rooms, he could hide, why did he have to find the most hazardous of all of them? Too bad cause Yunho loved playing dangerous.
“A man~” One of the young beautiful girls said and all of them turned to look at the newcomer.
Yunho raised one eyebrow cautiously, a harem? He haven’t heard of those since the Old Kingdom and that means when the Scorpion King was still alive. Was the prince, a kinky boy, some sort of? Did he want many women, instead of one?
Yunho’s train of thoughts stopped when he felt many delicate hands wrapping around him. “So handsome~” A cute girl next to him mumbled and batted her eyelashes at him. “And sexy~” Another one said quickly. He will be damned if he is about to say no to such attractive women who just seek for his attention.
Without the man knowing, half of the girls distracted Yunho, while the other half took his bow, arrows and the small sword he had hidden. In the meantime, a female that was not occupied with Yunho, went to the centre of the room to hit a giant golden gong that was there with an equally big wooden stick.
The sound distracted Yunho and made him come back to his senses, only to realize the sound also warned the guards from outside that there was someone that shouldn’t be inside the room. The door was opened abruptly the next second and the man got into position to fight, just to perceive that his weapons were missing.
He cursed himself for falling into the trap of seduction. He liked beautiful things and that was something he was not proud of, because he was swayed quite easily. He had been victim of many pranks before thanks to Changmin and Yoochun knowing his weaknesses. But something he was proud of was, no matter how pretty, it was difficult for him to fall in love. That’s why he waited for the right one.
Now, back to present, Yunho had big problems. He had to escape before they - and Imhotep- found out that there is a man from Upper Kingdom here, especially the soon to be king.
Desperate situations call for desperate measures.
When the first guard tried to attack him, Yunho dodged his sword that was about just a centimeter from piercing his belly and instead punched him square on the jaw and then straight to the gut. While he was trying to overcome the pain, Yunho used the chance to take his sword, that the girls hadn’t had the time to take yet, out and defended himself with it when the second one approached. This time, he moved around more freely, his grip strong on the sword, maneuvering it, cutting the guard’s skin and drawing blood out. He didn’t want to kill them, but they left him no other choice but to do so. That’s why he did not felt that guilty when his sword pierced right through him, killing the guard in an instant.
Soon enough, more guards showed up and Yunho knew there is no way he could kill of them at the same time. It was time for an escape plan, now.
Yunho turned around to see if he could find some kind of getaway, and it wasn’t until a breath later that his eyes were fixed on a window not too far away that could be his breakthrough. Since the window was too narrow to fit in, Yunho had to find another way. Then he had an idea. The wall must be weak there and that means that if he uses the gong, he can break it and escape. He ran towards the gong, intending to cut the rope holding it in place. At the same time archers came in and started shooting arrows. The harem was now full screams, the girls trying to escape, fearing for their own lives. When the gong was free, Yunho used it and rolled it around towards the wall with all his might, while he protected his own body from the impending attacks. With one last push, the gong broke the wall down, and fell off of the palace landing on the sand a few meters away from the main entrance. Yunho saved himself just in time before he fell off too and turned around, only to see the guards coming towards him at full speed.
Then Yunho looked down and saw a window in the middle of the roof tiles directly under him. Glad his luck hadn’t run out yet, he made a jump for it, praying the room he would land on doesn’t have any more dangers in it. Yunho closed his eyes, hoping the fall will be pleasant. The impact had been quite strong, but when did not feel the cool air anymore, he knew he landed safely and alive. He groaned, his body hurting everywhere and his head aching from pain. The height had been another matter all together, every inch of his body reminding him not to do that ever again.
With a little difficultly, he managed to stand up and draw his sword out once again, he had put it inside its case since he didn’t want to wound himself during the fall.
The first thing he saw, was two girls running away, having heard his impact on the ground and seeing he was not an ordinary man falling from the sky, it was normal for them to be scared. Let’s not forget their loud screaming that not only it could warn the guards but it also worsened his newly formed headache more. However, he was shocked because the girls didn’t try to leave the room, but instead they stayed stuck on the wall -after locking the door- sealing his escape. What could have made them stay here? It was then Yunho noticed that he landed on the royal bathroom.
The royal bathroom was the most elegant room of all, usually. The golden exterior and the detailed paintings with black ink were a sight to behold. A nice aroma filled Yunho’s senses and his eyes focused on the mini waterfall that was created in the back of the pool. A pool that was full of red, pink and white rose petals and crystal clear water.
He didn’t have time to ponder on his thoughts much though, because something happened that made his breath hitch and he felt like the air had been knocked out of him.
Suddenly out of nowhere, a man rose from within the water in all his complete and naked glory. Obvious to his surroundings, the man pushed his jet black hair back and took a much needed breath. His skin was milky white, looking delicious and sparkling thanks to the lighting of the room as the rose petals and water droplets slowly made their way down his beautiful body.
Yunho could literally see everything, and it was just the side profile. His eyes followed that last pink rose petal that it glided down slowly -as if wanting to stay forever stuck-starting from the man’s abs, going all the way down to thigh and falling into the water in a matter of seconds. Red lips were parted, tongue coming out to sweep over a lower lip. Then the man used his hand to mess his hair up, massaging his outstretched neck in the process and turning his whole body towards Yunho’s direction.
Yunho completely lost it when the man opened his eyes and gazed at him, face looking seductive -not even looking surprised. “Well,” with one swift movement the gorgeous male grabbed a small blade that was near him, next to some fruits and took a fighting pose. “Are you going to kill me or just stare at me?”
Instead of answering, Yunho gulped and made a run for it…towards the pool.
Before the male could open his mouth to protest as to why Yunho was next to him and not attacking him, Yunho spoke. “Are you the prince, the true king?” He asked, not even bothering with explanations.
“I am Jaejoong, and you are?” Jaejoong smirked, knowing Yunho was being chased at the moment but deciding to tease the other despite him being in peril.
Yunho looked confused for a second; however he quickly realized that this was indeed the person he was looking for. “You are the Prince! I am Yunho, soon to be Pharaoh of the Upper Kingdom.”
At that, Jaejoong stopped being smug, what the tanned male said shocking him in more ways than one. “Are you crazy? What are you doing here!?” The young man hissed, completely forgetting he is still very much naked.
“I came here to find you, of course! You must come with me!” Yunho had to be fast or else he will be in great danger.
Jaejoong stayed silent. It seems there is a change of events. What he was looking for came to him… willingly.
All of sudden, shouts could be heard from outside the door, the guards hitting it and demanding for it to be opened right away. Yunho’s eyes widened and he looked desperately at Jaejoong, hoping the latter wouldn’t betray him. A sigh left Jaejoong’s lips that was promptly replaced by a pout. He motioned at the girls to open the door and then looked at Yunho once again.
“Hold your breath.” Was all Jaejoong said and pushed Yunho’s head into the water roughly without a warning, just in time for the guards to barge in and demand directions as to where the intruder might be.
“Where is he?!” The older soldier of the group asked, the others behind him looking around frantically for any signs of suspicious movement.
“As you can see there is no one here.” Jaejoong responded composedly and went closer to the rim of the pool, putting his palms on it, “And if you are looking for the intruder, he left, and that’s why we are locked up in here.”
The guards stared at him warily, not believing his answer. Needless to say that angered Jaejoong, making him look menacingly at them.
“You heard me! Now leave, before I personally inform the Pharaoh that you invaded my personal space while I was bathing!” It was forbidden for the guards or anyone for that matter to enter the royal quarters without permission, especially the royal bathrooms. That’s why when Jaejoong shouted at them, they scattered away, not wanting to be punished and left the room quickly.
Meanwhile, Yunho was almost at his wits end. He could barely hold his breath any longer, let alone the fact that his face was at such close proximity with Jaejoong’s body and it was really distracting. Just when he was about to pass out, not trained to be underwater for so long, he felt the Prince’s hand grappling his hair in a strong grip and pulling him out of the water ruthlessly. He panted as he gasped for air, chest heaving up and down, spluttering as he tried to compose himself.
“They will come back when they realize I lied to them,” Jaejoong’s cold exterior despite what just went on a few minutes ago, left Yunho astonished. “You have to leave.” He sank into the pool and simply moved his arms, throwing water and rose petals on his shoulders; enjoying the hot water on his skin and relaxing as if nothing happened.
“But-but-” No person on earth had managed to leave Yunho this flustered. What the hell was up with this man? He was confusing Yunho, yet he was so intriguing.
“We will meet each other again soon, I promise. Now go before Ihmotep’s guards find you or worse, I will call them personally.”
Knowing this was a threat and somehow trusting the other’s words, Yunho quickly left but not before saying one last sentence. “It’s a promise, Nefertum.”
