One alternative is to take her to a vet or a shelter and see if she's been microchipped.
When I was growing up we had a cat turn up on our porch (and greet us as if we had just arrived at HIS place) and he was in good condition, but we knew he wasn't local. Turns out he'd gone missing six blocks away...several months in the past! He'd gotten lost and was gradually working his way along, being so nice that he was fed. His family was thrilled to get him back--they'd given up hope.

1) She's an outdoor cat who belongs to someone and is allowed to wander, in which case her owners are:
a) stupid not to keep a collar on her
b) delusional if they think they can control what she eats
2) She used to belong to someone and is either lost or abandoned
3) She's a stray/feral who is oddly friendly.
In any case, there's no harm in offering her food. I say give her a little bowl of something. If she gobbles it up, you know she's not getting enough and may need help finding her way back to her own family. If she just nibbles occasionally, you know she's just a free spirit having a little fun.

So I'll leave something totally non related :D
Anyway, first time checking your LJ, but surely not the last. I was browsing today and remembered to check up on this -old- fic I loved "Number One Fan"(not the only one though).
And when I didn't see a new chapter I decided to stalk down the author-s, and leave a encouraging hello :)
Hope you get around to finish that one/write something new, I'm sure I'm not the only one checking it from time to time!
