Character

Name: Son Goku
Fandom: Dragon Ball
Gender: male
Age: 46
Time Period: end of manga (shortly after meeting Uub, ten years after Kid Buu was defeated)
Wing Color: white
History: Wikia(not counting anything from Dragonball GT, filler, or movies; I’m sticking with the manga as far as canon goes, though I may incorporate this since it doesn’t seem to contradict anything and fits in well with the timeline, unlike the various movies that the series has)

Personality: Goku is unusual for his species (Saiyan, a race of humanoid aliens with ape-like tails) in that, though he likes to fight, he doesn’t do so for the thrill of the battle or pumping up his own ego, but to better himself. Even when he is in a fight determining the survival of his friends, his planet, or by the end of the series, the universe, he still tries to encourage his opponent to go all-out rather than holding back - his fights with Piccolo, Freeza, Cell, and Buu all exemplified this, as he preferred to fight one-on-one and would not allow his lengthy roster of allies to back him up when the time came for their final battle. If he encounters an opponent who is stronger than himself, it does absolutely nothing to discourage him - rather, it motivates him to become stronger and surpass this opponent.

In contrast to his wife Chichi, who is rather strict when it comes to their children's education, Goku is easy-going, preferring to have fun and live for the moment rather than worry about the future. Goku is an incredibly forgiving individual - most of his allies consist of people who tried to kill him at one point or another, and he still trusts them implicitly. The only thing Goku loves more than fighting is eating, as he eats bowls upon bowls of food whenever he has the opportunity, blowing Muten Roshi’s entire tournament winnings on a restaurant bill at one point.

Goku may be a grandfather by the end of his series, but age does not equal maturity by any means. Though he is nearly in his fifties, he is still as pure-hearted, optimistic, and forgiving as he was when Bulma found him in the woods. Cruelty is simply not in his nature - he is one of the few characters pure enough to survive the attacks of Akkuman and ride the Kintoun cloud, and even when he tries to act cruel such as when he fought Uub, he is incapable of doing so convincingly. He may be willing to kill at times, but unlike his fellow Saiyans, he only does so under situations of extreme duress, and even if his foe extinguished an entire civilization, murdered several of his friends, or has a grudge against Goku and refuses to give up, he will still give them a chance to escape or reform. He prefers to let his opponents live so that they can become stronger and challenge him again, which tends to have the added bonus of gradually making them better people.

Though Goku is absurdly powerful, he is also quite modest - he prefers to live a life of obscurity, even though his defeats of Piccolo Daimao and Majin Buu would give him fame and fortune beyond his wildest dreams. Instead, he prefers to let people like Mr. Satan stay in the spotlight, as he was willing to throw a fight against Mr. Satan for no additional prize money. Rather, he seems to make his living as a farmer, which was one of the methods that Muten Roshi used to train him, making the job quite easy for him.

Strengths:

Physical: Thanks to a lifetime of training, Goku is absurdly powerful, fast, and durable. He was the first Saiyan in hundreds of years to achieve the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan, and became able to maintain the form indefinitely if he wanted through extensive training. This gets to the point where, when the highest possible being in the Dragon Ball cosmology is introduced, Goku and his friends have already surpassed said diety in strength by a large margin. Even as a child, he was capable of taking down an entire army single-handedly in his second quest to gather the Dragon Balls, showcasing his fearsome fighting ability. When it comes to physical strength and training, Goku is second to none.

Mental: Goku is a master at analyzing and adapting fighting techniques - after seeing his master, Muten Roshi, perform a Kamehameha once, he was able to produce a smaller version of it. He also gained the ability to fly this way, along with Tienshinhan’s Solar Flare technique. As well, nothing really seems to depress Goku - even the death of his best friend (multiple times over) only served to fuel his rage and hasten the demise of his murderer. Goku’s willpower is also extraordinary - he continues to fight no matter how broken his body is, and even if he can only use one limb, he will still try and find a way to win.

Emotional: despite his child-like behaviour, Goku can be surprisingly mature at times. After a brush with permanent death due to a heart disease (the Dragon Balls cannot bring someone back if they were killed by natural causes, which include diseases), he sought someone to replace him as a defender of Earth, knowing that he will not live forever, and that the people of Earth can’t always count on him to save the day. However, most of the time, he remains cheerful and confident, and it seems as though nothing can change that part of him. As well, Goku will go out of his way to help others, even giving up his own wish to bring someone else’s father back to life. In spite of all of his experiences, Goku is still pure-hearted - otherwise, he would not be able to ride his cloud steed Kintoun, and Akkuman (a villain whose special technique makes anyone with any evil in their heart explode) would have killed him instantly.

Weaknesses:

Physical: Despite his sheer effort when it comes to training combined with his natural strength, there are some aspects of his abilities which Goku has yet to master. He can only stay in his Super Saiyan 2 form for a few minutes, and his Super Saiyan 3 form for a few seconds, while he’s alive. When he’s visiting Earth from the afterlife, the duration is longer, but that option is unavailable here. As well, though the amount of ki energy that he can draw on is large, it is also limited - if he uses too much in a short period of time (such as transforming into Super Saiyan 3), he will not be able to use ki attacks effectively until he can recharge.

Mental: to put it politely, Goku is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. This mostly is due to his upbringing; he was orphaned and lived in the wilderness at a young age, so he did not have much in the way of education or etiquette training. He originally thought that marriage was a type of food, could not tell the difference between men and women without touching them, and no one is entirely sure how he fathered two children with Chichi. Even simple math eluded his grasp, as he thought that he was two years older than he actually was for the early portions of his life. Though Muten Roshi and Kami helped in this regard during his years under their tutelage, he is still not overly bright.

Emotional: Goku’s naivety is his greatest strength and his greatest weakness - on one hand, giving his foes a second chance wound up converting some of them to the side of good, and had he not done so, then the universe would be doomed several times over. However, this leads him to take on some all-but-suicidal strategies, such as giving Freeza some energy or giving Cell a Senzu Bean. The second literally resulted in his death, while the first could have resulted in the destruction of Earth if Trunks had not showed up and Goku had not escaped Namek before it exploded. As well, his unique upbringing means that he does not understand some aspects of society - for instance, he does not get that Gohan may not want to fight as much as Goku did at that age until Piccolo, the boy’s mentor, spells it out for him.

First Person: Q&A format.

1. What is your greatest ambition?
To be the strongest there is! I've still got a ways to go, though; I couldn't beat Majin Buu on my own, and there's probably even stronger guys out there, so I know that I’ve still got to get stronger!

2. How would you describe the most important person in your life?
Huh... That’s a tough one. Hard to say who's the most important to me... There’s Chichi, Gohan, and Goten, of course. They're my family, and Chichi’s always there for me, plus my kids always make me proud. Then there's Master Roshi, who’s taught me everything I know! Can't forget Bulma or Krillin either. I can't choose just one of 'em! They're my friends and family, and they're all important to me! Still, all of 'em are always there to support me when I need it, or pick up on things that I miss out on! They motivate me to do great things, and they’ll believe in me no matter what! No matter what happens to me, I know they’ll be alongside me to help me through it.

3. Do you have any regrets? If so, what are they?
Nope, can't think of any. Everything's turned out great so far, so I wouldn't change a thing!

4. Are you a team player?
Yeah, I am. I may be strong, but if my friends weren't around, or if I tried to do everything on my own, I dunno how many times Earth would've been destroyed or taken over! I know that my friends will pull through and do their best in the end, and I'll be there to help 'em if they need it.

5. Do you ever aspire to be more than what your original purpose? Do you regret being the way you are?
...Well, my reason for being sent to Earth was pretty bad, but I don't remember acting anything like that Raditz guy. Still, if I didn't start out the way I did, I wouldn’t have made so many friends or had as many adventures, so I don't regret being what I am.

Third Person:

Well, this was certainly strange. One moment, he had been flying across the sky, glad to have finally found a protégé and sparring partner, and the next, he was millimetres away from a tree. His reflexes may have been good, but they’ve never been that good, and given the speed he was flying at, he hit the tree hard.

Thankfully, his head was much harder than most trees - something that many of the people who knew him joked about constantly - so he crashed through several before coming to a stop. Picking the splintered wood out of his hair, the Saiyan looked around, confused.

“Huh. That’s weird. There weren’t any forests around for miles, and I definitely didn’t use Instant Transmission... What happened?” Goku tried to sense any nearby ki energy, but none of it was familiar. That alone was particularly strange - even at an interplanetary distance, he would have been able to sense the ki of Gohan, Vegeta, or Piccolo, even faintly, given how powerful they were. Now, no matter how far he extended his senses, he could not feel anything that even resembled them.

In fact, beyond a certain point, there was nothing as far as ki was concerned, severely limiting his options in regards to travel. Even King Kai’s ki was absent, which was disconcerting - that particular ki had been omnipresent, even after King Kai had been killed.

There were various sources of ki scattered throughout the area, but most of them were concentrated at a single point. Making up his mind, Goku chose to head toward the concentrated ki. However, rather than teleporting there, he chose to fly in that direction - it would give him a better chance at scouting out the area, and he might be able to get some impromptu training in over the course of the trip.
