4thdimensnskrtPERSONALITY: Maya is a fairly self-centered and stubborn girl, her eye on the prize, which in this case happens to be gems and jewels, and overall tends to come off as your average spoiled brat. More often than not, she acts before thinking, causing trouble for both her own team as well as others, and is quick to pin the blame on someone else. In the same vein, Maya tends to try taking credit, or at least some of it, for when things go well. She's somewhat impatient at times, and it doesn't always take a lot to rile her up, especially when it concerns gems or Virginia's "silly" crusade to bring justice to the wasteland.
Gems and jewels are Maya's primary goal in her adventures in Filgaia's wasteland; she considers them rewards for making it as far as she has successfully. This, of course, sees her crossing paths with Virginia many times along the course of the game, causing the both of them to battle, and getting the both of them into equal amounts of trouble as well. As Maya puts it, the more the gems sparkle, the more she sparkles. While she states at one point her desire to find the "real sparkle" (the Teardrop), she offers no explanation as to what it is, other than that no matter how many false leads it takes, she'll find it.
Maya is somewhat tsundere towards Virginia's party; she considers Virginia weak at first, not suited to be out in the wasteland as a Drifter, and finds Virginia silly for wanting to try to change the world. To an extent, Maya is right; she's more experienced than her, and considerably more knowledgeable in how things work. As the game progresses, though, she begins to warm up to Virginia a bit, acknowledging that she's matured, and has grown stronger. They form a temporary alliance at one point, while at Survey Point #17, though Maya denies that it means they're on a friendly basis now, or that it's for the sake of Filgaia. As Maya puts it, she has no intention of exerting her strength for the sake of others; she simply doesn't want the Aguelite and Germatron falling into the hands of Janus, and even remarks a short while later that she's hesitant about teaming up with Virginia again, as her victories have been gained by herself and herself alone. Naturally, Maya goes back to being rivals to Virginia's team afterwards, giving her half of the loot as a means for them both to fight.
Although she may not seem like it, Maya does deep down care for her friends- she just doesn't show it for the most part. She almost sacrifices herself at Deus Ex Machina, staying behind to activate the self-destruct mechanisms, so that the others can get out safely, though makes it out as well, herself, in the end. Towards the end of the game, even, Maya finally acknowledges Virginia's crusade to bring justice and restore Filgaia to it's former state. However, in true Maya fashion, she states that she'll be the one to make Filgaia green again, even proclaiming that she'll run for President.
BACKGROUND: Maya is part of a four-person Drifter team that collectively is simply known as the Schroedinger family, though only Alfred, her younger brother, is related to her. Aside from Alfred, the party consists of Todd Dukais, who is the family's butler (who also sports an afro and has a sword hidden in his cane), and Shady Thousand, a talking (and claustrophobic) cat who can breath both fire and ice.
She's also somewhat of the comedic relief, despite being a boss encounter multiple times ingame.
The first encounter with the Schroedinger family is in Serpent's Coils, where she tries to stop the party from advancing further, showing up to kick switches to close doors and overall try to impede their progress. They have a battle, which is cut short when Alfred remarks that Janus' team is moving on ahead, and this is where her name is revealed- Maya Schroedinger, from the renowned Schroedinger family, and that Virginia had better not get in her way.
They meet again at Ka Dingel, where Janus' gang has attacked the Shroedingers, so as to get them to hand over the Crio shield, and to lure Virginia's team into handing over the Andro shield. This works, as Virginia rushes in to save Maya and her team, handing over the Andro shield, just as Janus wants, despite Maya's protests.
The second encounter that leads to a battle occurs at the Gemstone Cave, where we first learn about Maya's ability to emulate book characters, as she so demonstrates with her new persona, a magical witch. She tries to stop the party, again, from advancing further, believing there to be rare gems in the cave, only to find that she's been misled.
Her third appearance is at Survey Point #17, in which Maya and Virginia temporarily team up. Maya insists this doesn't mean they're friends now, of course, just that she doesn't want the Aguelite and Germatron falling into the wrong hands (aka Janus). This temporary alliance doesn't last long, of course, and she goes right back to being rivals right afterward, giving Virginia half of the loot as a reason for them to fight.
This eventually leads to a third boss encounter with the Schroedingers, in which her second transformation is revealed, a martial arts user type. Virginia asks after the battle why they have to fight like this, to which Maya reminds Virginia that she loves gems, and that they're her personal reward for doing her best and working hard. She acknowledges she has some respect for Virginia now that the other girl has grown stronger, but still insists this doesn't mean they're a team now. Of course, this potentially emotional moment is cut short when Virginia accidentally holds the Aguelite and Germatron together...right when Maya warns her not to, due to their opposite properties having the power to cause the ruins to explode.
Team Schroedinger isn't seen for awhile after this, until Virginia's team makes it to the top of the Caging Tower, where Maya reveals that the Teardrop gem there is a fake...though she sends Shady in to fetch it anyway. As it turns out, it's a trap set by the Prophets, who, while they hadn't expected Maya, kidnap her anyway, as they decide that her knowledge and abilities would come in handy. She's taken to Deus Ex Machina, where she's forced into her true appearance by the book "Your Honest Self", and made to tell the Prophets all she knows.
Maya is finally rescued at Deus Ex Machina, teaming up finally with Virginia once more to find a way to stop the Prophets and Siegfried, and to get back the Teardrop. Initially, she stays behind to activate the self-destruct mechanism, while the others leave. It is here that she defeats Siegfried for good, by herself, and manages to escape the now crumbling building unharmed, using her transformation abilities to deal with falling rubble in her way. After everyone escapes on Lombardia, Maya's team says their goodbyes to Virginia's, stating they're off on their next big adventure.
At the end of the game, Maya declares that her new goal is to restore Filgaia to its former state, and to become its president, though it's possible it's merely empty boasting, as she helps clear a path in the Ark of Destiny for Virginia's team to advance, fighting the monsters for her.
ABILITIES: Maya has the ability to emulate the appearances and abilities of book characters, so as long as she reads the books first. Ingame, she had three transformations, including her default outfit:
"Disaster Girl of the Wasteland"- Her default appearance, a Calamity Jane lookalike.
"Wonder Witch"- Her second transformation, a elemental magic caster.
"Fighting Artist"- Her third transformation, a martial arts user.
Her real appearance, as revealed late in the game, is actually that of a mousy and geeky looking schoolgirl.
Maya also has something like a subspace pocket in her skirt, called the "fourth dimension skirt" in the manga anthology, which allows her to essentially pull a chain gun from out of nowhere just by shaking her skirt.
POSSESSIONS: The clothes on her back, her books, her ARMs (a Vantage Range MM7 pistol and a chain/submachine gun, AW-RSTN87)
TIMELINE: Post-game
