I agree; as an overarc plot, it has its problems/giant plotholes, but the character work more than made up for it. And I wasn't even a fan of bringing Spock in, or Pike, but both ended up winning me over.
Cornwall's death was totally pointless. I guess they had to have someone die for the stakes to be raised, but she was a rad character and didn't get enough focus at that point in the story for her death to carry the emotional weight. It seemed to affect mainly Pike, who we won't see again. But I'm glad that Jet and Nhaan survived, as I figured one of them would be the big sacrifice.
I'm glad it's now no longer a prequel. I always thought the prequel concept was the weakest part, as they had all kinds of cool ideas, like the spore drive, that were limited by TOS canon.
