If it happens again there is a temporary way that might get it going again. Take a small metal stick/pipe or other hard object and gently knock on the side of the starter 5 to 10 times. That will usually get a failing starter to work a few more times.
It's definitely not a good long-term solution, but it's a good trick to know if you ever get stuck in the middle of nowhere with a car that won't start. It's also the same technique AAA uses.
It appears that my starter is working fine, actually. Dad suspects the ignition module, which is three times as expensive as a starter, so I am slightly depressed.
That is a handy trick though. A little percussive therapy, eh?
