I used to do things like that all the time at Barnes and Noble, especially when I was shelving. Talking and smiling and laughing to myself. It passed the time and none of the daft pregnant yuppie hussies bothered me for help, though that was merely a pleasant side-effect and not the ultimate aim.
In high school such alone-time/oblivious-to-other-people behaviour warranted my doctors asking if I was on speed and my classmates thinking I was some sort of drug addict. Which is funny because to this day, the only "recreational" drugs I have used/tried are alcohol and nicotine.
