When Winry first handed Ed her earrings, she told him to hold them for her.

"I'll be waiting for you back at the fort!" she said.

"A-alright!"

He never got back to fort. In fact, he never saw Fort Briggs again.

He had heard that when you were about to die, your entire life up to that point flashes before your eyes. That did not occur for him. Instead, he thought of the people waiting for him, and he thought of Winry. He had made a big show of telling her that when she cried again they would be tears of joy, and she believed him.

He saw her cry when her parents died in Ishval. He knew she would cry just as much if he died there. Maybe even more.

Ed punched the ground stubbornly. He had to make it through this. He would not make her cry over him. Not to mention, he still had to return her earrings.

When Ed woke up, he tried to figure out where he was. First thing that caught his attention was that his stomach hurt like hell. He was not dead, that was the second thing. He reached into his pants pocket. His fingers brushed metal, something poked his fingers.

He started to relax. He still had Winry's earrings, and he was still alive. So she had nothing to cry over.

Walking out of Resembool, Ed stuck his hands in his pockets. Once again, his fingers touched her earrings. He stopped, pulling them out of his pockets.

Why had he not given them back to her? He could have when they were together. He could have handed them to here, or he could have left them on the table.

He started to think that maybe it was because his journey was not over yet. It would feel wrong if he gave them back to her. They were an ever-present reminder of his promise to not make her cry of sadness, and to come back in one piece. Although he was a bit unsure about the 'one piece' part, as his automail was certain to get at least a bit damaged during the coming struggle.

In the back of his mind, he admitted that he might just like having the earrings with him. It was like having Winry with him, but in way that she was out of danger.

"Hey, keep moving, Kid!" Greed called impatiently.

"Shut up, I'm coming!" Ed snapped back, putting the earrings back in his pocket.

It was strange how easily the world went on after the promised day, but that was how the universe was. All is one, and one is all, after all. Now he and Al were on the train back to Resembool, on their way home. He knew she would cry when he got there, but he did not mind now. They would be tears of joy, just as he promised. He pulled out her earrings again. He could finally give them back to her, too.

"Aren't those Winry earrings, Nii-San?" Al asked.

"Yeah, she gave them to me to hold on to at Briggs," He said, "I don't know why she couldn't hang on to them herself." Ed had sort of liked having them with him, but he would not admit it.

Al smiled. He said, "You're very sweet, Nii-San."

"Who asked you?"

Winry was still walking on clouds, so she had trouble falling asleep. Treading quietly, she went downstairs to get a glass of warm milk.

They had left the windows open, and in the moonlight, something shimmered on the living room table. She went over to look. They were her earrings, all of them, sitting there on the table.

She had not thought of them, as she was more pre-occupied with the boys’ safety, but obviously, Ed had. Putting them back in her ears, she smiled. Ed might be reckless, stubborn, caused her endless worry, and never took care of his automail, but he was the best at keeping promises.
