At first it did not seem so bad. Riza just thought of it as if she were the protector of a book. Even if the book contained possibly devastating knowledge.

She was not to share the knowledge with anyone, but it was a small comfort to not be alone in knowing. Her father, the one that had tattooed the words on her back, also knew the information.

When her father took an apprentice, she wondered if she would be able to share with him her family's secrets. The boy, who introduced himself as Roy Mustang, seemed trustworthy and strong. His eyes were the most focused she had ever seen.

Roy studied hard, and was kind to Riza. After he found out when her birthday was, he always got her something. He was always helping, and was determined to protect people.

Then he joined the military academy, saying it was so he could do just that.

"Even if you say it's for the people, Father will not give his research to a soldier," She said when he was leaving for the academy.

"I'll have to convince him then." Roy said, as he packed, "I know that this is the right thing to do." he left shortly afterwords. Riza's father shook his head

"It'd be a waste to teach him flame alchemy."

Riza missed having Roy around, and She tried to keep herself busy, reading the newspaper and listening to the radio for news on the military. She sometimes thought of joining the military herself, but she never mentioned in to her father.

Roy sent letters when he could. He said the military was tough, but he was pulling through. He had found a friend, Maes Hughes.

"He's a pain." Roy wrote, "After I told him it was a girl he was writing about, he hasn't stopped bothering me about it!"

Despite how much Roy complained about Hughes, Riza could just from the letters that they were becoming very close.

Then one day, after she came back from the market with fresh produce, she found a second car parked out her house. Confused, she hurried inside.

No one was in the entrance hall or the main room, so she suspected they were in the upstairs study with her father. She went to put the groceries down in the kitchen.

"Sensei!" Someone exclaimed, loud enough for her to hear downstairs. Riza recognized the voice. It was Roy's. She looked up at the ceiling when he again exclaimed, "Sensei!"

She dashed up the stairs, unnerved by the distress in Roy's voice as he continued,

"Sensei! Hawkeye-Sensei! Someone-someone call a doctor!"

She rushed down the hall, anxiety reaching unmeasrable heights in her heart.

"Is anyone here?" he cried just as she opened the door. She froze, shrinking against the door.

"Riza!"

She had always treasured the fact that she was not alone in her secrets, but now it was different. Her father, the sole person who shared the burden of knowledge, was held up by Roy and coughing blood.

"Call a doctor!" Roy cried. Somehow she processed this request, and ran to the phone. The paramedics came quickly, but they were unable to save him.

So now she was the only one with the secret on her back.

After the funeral they went back to her house. Looking out the window, she said,
"Mr. Mustang, do you truly believe you can help this nation's people with alchemy?"

"Yes," Roy answered without hesitation.

Riza smiled. "Alright. That's enough. That's enough."

She undid her shirt buttons and let it fall to the floor.

Riza's back still stung from the burns. Her secret had been something that should have never existed, and although she could not undo the damage it had already caused, she could prevent any further harm.

She had only showed it to Roy, and he helped her destroy it. He was reluctant, not because he did not want to eliminate the knowledge, but because he did not want to hurt her in the progress. So he burned only the smallest amount, just enough to make the secrets illegible. She thanked Roy all the same.

Just like her father, she could not risk the secrets if Flame Alchemy being used unjustly. Just as it had in ishval.
