38/50 Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil by Deborah Rodriguez and Kristin Ohlson

Found this recc'd here and was compelled to read it as an example of capitalism freeing people (particularly women) and developing countries. Like microfinance. XD But it has little to do with economics-- it's a memoir about an American woman who goes to Afghanistan after 9/11 and ends up opening a beauty school. She details the various challenges of running a school and navigating the culture. Rodriguez jumped straight off the page for me as a fun, strong and kind woman. The stories she told of her students and coworkers were, in turn, normal, touching, and tragic.

After the memoir, I kind of wanted a sequel about the rest of Rodriguez's life in Kabul, but I just found an article saying she was in the States with no plans to go back and that some of the students described in the book (the book uses aliases, btw) were in trouble. :(

Next: Peter and the Starcatchers... My friend also recommended the Ramona books to me, as I missed out on them in my rather deprived childhood. :D
