42/50 Wielding a Red Sword by Piers Anthony
The fourth in the Incarnations of Immortality series and the worst, to date. Concerning Mym, an Indian prince, who accepts the office of War.
The book started out fine, then slowed down when Mym assumed the office. And then Mym's character really got to me. For all that he is Indian and has a stutter, he is a lot like the past male incarnations/protagonists, except maybe worse. Really, Anthony, why must Mym be Indian to begin with? Because the author does not share his protagonist's race, it seems to free Anthony up to excuse Mym's otherwise inexcusable behavior. Because Mym doesn't share Anthony's culture. Really, he gets two women in the end, really?! Of the Incarnations, surely Mym represents what Anthony wishes he was: a great fighter, able to control some unstoppable berserker phase, and must sleep with women to save them. Wait, let's have that again: TO SAVE THEM. And he ends up with a woman who says she understands that a prince must have a concubine, and the concubine can change into any appearance and do anything kinky he wants.
Disappointing. But I was curious enough about Orb to keep reading.
43/50 Being a Green Mother by Piers Anthony
Being the fifth in the Incarnations of Immortality. Much better. I'm still stunned by the ending.
I actually liked the fact that Orb didn't spend a lot of time in her office. Orb searches for the Llano, the Song of Songs, traveling the world and meeting all sorts of people. She settles with a band from On A Pale Horse (which I thought was a nice touch, bringing back half forgotten characters. Ditto for the connecting of Mym-Orb-Orlene-Norton through Sning. I do love Sning.)
Meanwhile, Orb must deal with the prophecy made before her birth that she would marry Evil. It has the allure of the time-honored device: the girl falling in love with the ultimate in bad boys. And again I liked the ending. Dare I say it, it was truly romantic? O_o That a man would love a woman enough to deny his very basic nature and therefore die in a large gasp of fire? Tragic, yes, but right on.
The only part that sucked was when she nearly destroyed the world and wasn't doing much about it.
Next: Probably still Specials; almost the month of November with seven books left to go!
