3/50 A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo
is about a Chinese woman who moves to London to learn English. It feels like a multi-layered novel interweaving language, culture, love, and the differences between men and women.
I actually enjoyed the fact that the novel was written to reflect the main character's growing understanding of English. It wasn't difficult to understand at all (a wonder of linguistics, really) and I found myself filling in the blanks automatically when she missed an article.
The love story, meanwhile, mostly bored me. I couldn't figure out what Guo was trying to say through it, and the main character started to annoy me.
Still recommended because the love story probably wouldn't bore other people. :D
