I still feel immensely behind.

10/50 Septimus Heap: Flyte by Angie Sage

More adventures, continuing from Magyk. I didn't think it was as good as the first, though they are the same length (about 500 pages). The page length annoys me, really, because this is a recent trend in children's books (if not all books) and I'm not sure what the point is. I was missing a sense of an end goal that the first book had.

11/50 Princess Mia by Meg Cabot

I gave up on the Princess Diaries awhile back, but heard that this one was particularly good. Curiosity got the better of me, so I got it and read it, and surprisingly enjoyed it.

I had gotten sick of this series because it seemed to me like it had started to flag. Particularly under the weight of the Mia/Michael relationship. I think I liked the original trilogy precisely because of the build up towards Mia/Michael; afterwards, the series kind of lost its spice. (It seems to me that a lot of writers find it difficult to sustain a relationship past the initial get-together stage... case in point the Twilight series. The only one I've ever seen that managed to pull it off was the manga High School Debut which is really cute and recommended to those who like reading manga.)

Princess Mia, the latest entry in the series, finally breaks Mia/Michael up, propelling the princess towards Mia/JP. That, and a lot of other things. Mia becomes very depressed because Michael broke up with her. But at least Mia realizes that it is a bit shameful to be all messed up over a boy... which is a good source of drama instead of being an insult to feminism. Mia also brings democracy to Genovia, which I thought was a nice touch.

All in all, I was pleased with this volume of the Princess Diaries and will probably a) go back to the book where Mia first meets JP and b) read the next and presumably last one.

Next: Physik by Angie Sage
