hi heather! i have a question, i've heard bodice ripper referred to as a genre but what is it exactly? something to do with torrid love affairs maybe? but that's just me guessing.
essentially it's a type of historical romance, with the bodice and all, that has some extremely problematic issues regarding the "hero" and heroine of the story. the stereotypical chaste woman defends herself against the advances of some muscular man, until she succumbs or is forced into congress with him (although i don't think i'll have an actual bodice ripping, more like corset undoing or something, but its themes and such are close enough).
my mom loves these stories, and read through millions of volumes of them while i was growing up, so i thought it'd be interesting to defamiliarize it by putting it in context with two very different, though interrelated, stories. my main concern is trying to make sure the "hero" of the story is explained without absolving him of the issues brought up in the first story...
interestingly enough the possible torrid love affair doesn't appear until the second story!
sounds like an interesting concept... it does sound a little problematic on the surface, but i'm sure it's like anything and it could be told in a different kind of way. i am interested in stories that tie together at the end, especially told over time. good luck!
