Title: The Worst Part
Fandom: LotR
Characters: Den/Fin
Prompt: 36: you set fire to me that night, you lit and left me burning; out of my mind, but in my sights, I saw the tables turning
Word Count: 124
Rating: PG
Summary: The Prye does not scare him.
Author's Notes: Not my characters. I'd bet you anything that this doesn't fit the mood of the original piece, which I haven't heard, but I think it fits the words fairly well, considering that I rarely start and end with the same lyrics in mind.

The worst part was not the burning. He had lived with pain for most of his life. It was not the sense of displacement, this feeling of being lost; since the battles of mind and body had started, he had been fighting fogs of war and madness for the control of his thoughts. He missed his sons, but that pain was secondary to the single source of his overwhelming emptiness.

There were some, after the fact, that would call him mad. Perhaps they were right. Here, alone and desperate, he did not feel sane. He should be glad, that she had not seen the end of all things, as he had.

Still, the fact remained. The worst part was that she was not there.
