Comments: Happy holiday season! :3 ♥
Snow fell in fluffy clumps, store lights twinkled tantalizingly to advertise last-minute holiday sales, and Sakito released a heavy sigh as he peered through a shop window at the miniature winter village scene. Another Christmas alone…the third in three consecutive years. It should be illegal for anyone to spend that many Christmases with only the impersonal television for company. Friends were away with family, while his own was away on some godforsaken tropical vacation, with the excuse of wanting to get away from the city to warm their old bones. So…here he was, joining the ranks of other last-minute shoppers, the over-worked mothers and forgetful husbands and guilty boyfriends plus a few like himself, who had nothing better to do than venture out for some retail therapy.
The bittersweet and tantalizing smell of coffee reached his nose from several storefronts down, and Sakito soon found himself drifting toward it. Colorful, oversized ornaments dangled in the window of the coffee shop, all glitter and holiday cheer greeting the guitarist as he stepped through the door into the warmth of the small room. Having no place to go and no one to see, he fancied sitting here for a while would be much preferable to returning to his lonely apartment. A quick peek at the menu persuaded him to order something with chocolate and peppermint in the spirit of the season, and it turned out to be a good choice when Sakito was finally settled in a squashy armchair with his shopping bags strewn about his feet. Outside, the snow continued to fall in increasingly heavier doses, sparkling under the streetlights and on the window ledges of the shops. Sakito leaned against the heater lining the windows where he sat, daydreaming and watching the glass fog up and clear repeatedly as he breathed. Barely audible over the chatter of the other customers scattered around the shop, Christmas tunes played on the radio, as if the snow and decorations needed extra help to remind one that it was indeed the twenty-forth of December.
Sakito sipped at his drink, delighting in the sensation of the hot liquid warming him up from the inside out. If he could, he would stay there all night and not have to brave the snowstorm that was brewing outside to get home, but alas the hours printed on the door explicitly stated that they were closing early for the holiday. A half an hour passed while the guitarist nursed his drink, until a familiar face caught his eye in the stream of people passing the shop window. Their eyes met briefly at first without recognition, but a quick double-take from Niya caused Sakito to blink in surprise, followed by a wave of his hand and a smile for the bassist to join him.
Hurrying inside, Niya pulled up a chair to the little table Sakito had claimed, rubbing his hands together over the heating vent. “Hey, how’s it going? Out shopping?” the bassist greeted him with a nod to the bags on the floor.
“A bit. There wasn’t much else to do with everyone gone,” Sakito answered, perking up now that he had a friend to chat with, at least for a little while. “I thought you were going to visit family.”
Brushing snow off his coat, Niya turned his head to glance at the menu. “I was, but there’s a huge storm coming. I’ll go in a day or two when the roads are clear. I’m gonna get something,” he replied, pointing to the counter and standing again, only to returned a couple of minutes later with a steaming mug. “So what do you have planned for tonight besides spending all your money?”
“Well, I…uh…” Sakito stalled in an attempt to think of something worthwhile to tell the bassist, but nothing came to mind. Sighing, he finally responded, “Honestly, nothing. Nothing at all….”
Laughing, Niya took a sip of his drink, wincing when he found it to be too hot. “Same here. You wouldn’t…want some company for doing nothing, would you?”

The snow was beginning to be a menace by the time the two bandmates made it back to Sakito's apartment, evidenced by the number of people trying to rush home at the same time. They had walked since it wasn't a great distance and the cabs were all caught in storm-related traffic jams, but now looked rather more like snowmen than human beings by the time they were standing in the building's entryway. A small pile of melting snow was left in their wake as Sakito and Niya both shook off as much as possible instead of tracking it into the apartment, though the guitarist's shopping bags were sodden beyond aid.
Sakito's living room proved to be a perfect retreat from the icy world outside once they had the heater running full blast. In the corner, a squat, slightly crooked Christmas tree twinkled with a few matching ornaments and white lights, and it was this piece of decor that Niya was currently examining, stretched out on the carpet with his chin resting on his hands. "Your tree is deformed," he said absently, prodding one of the round ornaments to make it spin.
Poking his head out from the closet where he had been stashing the damp shopping bags, Sakito glanced over at the bassist. "Does it matter?" Completing the task by merely shoving the last of the bags onto the shelf instead of taking time to organize them, he emerged to join Niya on the floor, sitting cross-legged next to the bassist.
"I guess not." Niya chuckled, turning on his side of face Sakito with a curious expression. "Why did you decorate so much if you thought you were going to spend Christmas alone?"
Not the most comfortable question, to say the least, and the guitarist didn't have a particularly good answer. He shrugged and reached across Niya to grab a couple of peppermint sticks off the coffee table. "I don't know, really. Wishful thinking, I guess," he mused with a half smile, handing a piece of the candy to his friend then unwrapping his own. "And it looks like it wasn't all for nothing - you're here to see it, right?"
"...You must be pretty desperate if you consider that exciting. You see me like every day." Niya laughed and bit off part of his peppermint stick. "When was the last time you had a date?"
"I dunno, it hasn't exactly been top priority lately," the guitarist replied, thoughtfully sucking on a bite of candy. "I plan on becoming a batty old geezer with more pigeons than friends anyway."
With another light chuckle, Niya stood and held out a hand for Sakito to take. "Come on pigeon lady, let's watch stupid Christmas specials on TV."
Sakito didn't put voice to his thoughts, but however plain Niya's words were, it sounded to him almost like an invitation to heaven and it was then that the guitarist fully realized how lonely he had been. Friendship was one thing, but companionship something more. It wasn't enough to know that he had friends that cared, he needed their presence, a comforting hand in his own. He reached up to take the bassist's hand, the warmth seeping from Niya's fingers into his own, chasing away the chill better than any fresh coffee or clanking radiator. A brief flash of the next morning, dawning cold and empty, squeezed his heart with anxiety, and before he could stay his tongue, a hinted plea for help fell from his lips. "Do you want to stay over tonight?"
Pulling the guitarist to his feet, Niya scratched his head and shrugged. "Sure, we'll probably be snowed in later anyway."
Feeling the weight lift from his shoulders, Sakito replaced his blank mask with a relieved smile, sidling over to the couch and settling on one of the cushions, unfolding the oversized throw blanket he kept neatly on the back to spread over his slender legs. Niya joined him after a speedy hunt for the remote, taking half of the blanket for himself. A prod to the device had the TV blink to life across the room, and another switched channels until they had a satisfactory holiday program playing, catching the attention of Niya and Sakito alike, although the latter didn't much care what they watched.
Side by side, they watched quietly, content to leave the holiday rush to the rest of the world. With the calming light from the Christmas tree and the storm outside and the heat from the human body next to him, Sakito found himself lulled to sleep, his last conscious thought before his head tipped to rest against his bandmate’s arm being a silent wish that the snow would keep Niya here for longer than tonight.
Niya felt the extra weight leaning against him and realized the guitarist had fallen asleep. Fearing he would wake the other if he moved too much, the bassist took his time as he tugged the blanket up to tuck around Sakito’s shoulders, settling a little more comfortably himself into the plush couch cushions. Just before Niya drifted off toward the end of the movie, he thought he saw Sakito smile in his sleep, wondering what he was dreaming about and hoping it was him.
