Part 3

Days stretched into weeks and Niya still felt under the weather, though now he was thoroughly convinced it was only because he was away from Sakito. His mood turned surly, refusing to be more than marginally civil to friends, family - even the poor, unsuspecting milk delivery man was subjected to occasional outbursts. Perturbed by the increasing frequency at which he needed to see the other man in order to placate his growing desire and assuage the bizarre illness, Niya could only wait impatiently between dinner dates, until finally he invited Sakito to visit his apartment for a drink instead.

The moon was full - had it truly been a month already since they first met? Niya paced his living room, pondering the loss of long, empty hours from his memory. Days void of seeing the glittering pools of starlight in Sakito's eyes. The lonely sun and moon seemed lusterless in comparison, unworthy of being remembered. He didn't wonder if Sakito knew or accepted his attention; the possibility of rejection hadn't even occurred to him.

The night buzzed with an unnatural electricity, transforming the shadows of the candles he lit into macabre beasts with teeth to devour his soul. Niya decided it was rather like insanity, stabilized by the soft knock on the door. He practically flew to open it, stumbling over an ottoman in his path. Breathlessly, he greeted his guest and ushered him in.

"I thought you would never get here," Niya murmured while Sakito hung his jacket.

The pharmacist seemed particularly reserved and drawn that night, "I'm here now."

Without leaving his side, Niya managed to guide him toward the couch and pour wine at the same time. His hand trembled as he offered the glass, and Sakito snatched it quickly before any of the ruby liquid spilled. The silence was terrible, yet Niya couldn't think of a single point of conversation, a twitch starting in his cheek in time to the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. All he could do was gaze at the lithe body in front of him, a hungry light stealing into his eyes. Clearly uncomfortable, Sakito rose and began idly padding around the room, looking without really seeing at the fashionable odds and ends on the tables, walls, and mantle. He ran a hand unscathed through the flame of one of the candles, Niya noticed, but the gesture didn't register as strange.

"Your apartment is very nice," Sakito said in an effort to break the silence. Niya nearly jumped out of his skin, startled as the mundane words cut through the thick atmosphere.

"Thanks..." Talk in general seemed trivial and pointless. Taking a step forward, Niya was across the room before he knew what he was doing, coming up suddenly behind Sakito as the other admired a small painting. Superior weight pressed him against the wall, Niya's hands everywhere at once, sliding roughly over his body, while burning lips sought along the décolleté neckline of his draped clothing.

Freezing in place, Sakito didn't try to escape, which only encouraged him to keep going. Hot fingertips teased under the hem of his shirt, eliciting an unintelligible noise of protest from the back of his throat. Niya ignored it until his hands were physically extracted from Sakito's smooth stomach, at which point he looked up at the other's face in annoyance.

"Niya, stop. We can't do this," Sakito said, but the request went mostly unheeded while Niya moved in again to nibble on his neck. Why stop? This is exactly what he had been dreaming about for the past month. Sighing in exasperation, Sakito wiggled away when the arms pinning him to the wall loosened briefly to change positions.

"Really. Stop." He moved to stand maddeningly just out of reach. "You're engaged, Niya."

"...So?" He choked out, almost growling. Nothing Sakito could say would change his mind, he was sure of it. Betrothed or not, Niya couldn't deny his obsession. Across the room the other man was wringing his hands indecisively. Perhaps a few more kisses would charm him to stay.

"So...I can't keep lying to you anymore." Words tumbled off Sakito's tongue in a rush. "You're not in love with me."

"What? Don't be ridiculous, I think I know my own feelings." But there was something about the notion, absurd though it was, that rang true, but Niya couldn't place why.

Turning his face away, Sakito continued, morose and regretful, "I know because...I put a curse on you...."

Like a violent storm, the cloud obscuring Niya's inner sight was lifted as quickly as it had fallen. Horror stole over his features as the spell broke and he realized everything since meeting Sakito has all been a lie, orchestrated by the other's witchcraft. His now clear eyes looked at Sakito with nothing but anger, seeing him as a devilish beast instead of beauty incarnate.

"Get out."
