[For Lystra, Agravain and Melou] Growing pains

Jul 12, 2013 02:13

We'll admit that while Jack dotes on his daughter, he's of the "Go the F*** to Sleep" school of parenting. He's parented one daughter from the nights he walked the floor with her howling on his shoulder, to the day he walked her down the aisle on her wedding day. Can't be too hard to raise another one, now that he knows what to expect ( Read more... )

Agravain is totally the kind of guy who randomly stalks the hallways at midnight, so here he is.

"Having fun?" he asks.

"Not particularly, but at least this ain't my first tour of duty," Jack says, over Verrity's whimpers. "First time she's ever heard a thunderstorm, and she's not sure what to make of it."

"She doesn't seem to like it much," Agravain says, peering at Verrity. "She looks like a frog."

He is obviously exaggerating, but he does think young babies look kind of weird.

"Now how can you say that about a beautiful little girl?" Jack says, with a humorous lilt. Then gently covering the side of Verrity's head that isn't buried in his neck, he adds, "Between you and me, she looks like a hairless howler monkey when she's this wigged-out."

Lystra is sensible enough to be in bed at midnight, so maybe she could run into Jack and Verrity the following day?

When she sees them she's going to gasp and come running over, because cute baby.

It's later in the morning, after Jack's wee-hours shift on watch, and as he's bringing Verrity downstairs for her breakfast (and his own).

"Ahh, good morning, your Highness," he says, darting a slightly tired grin to Lystra. Then with a glance to the grumbling bundle in his arms, "Well, she hatched."

"She's so cute!" Lystra gushes. "Can I hold her?"

"Sure thing, though be warned: she's happiest when she's physically touching me," he says, gently holding the little one out to Lystra.

Here's Melou, who can be found sulking in the corner of a corridor somewhere.

He's not going to talk to Jack. In fact, he's going to pretend that he hasn't even noticed Jack is there.

He might hear the father and child before he sees them, Verrity's querulous whimpering half-drowned out by Jack endeavoring to sing "Suo Gan". He means well, but he's clearly a non-speaker of Welsh (and he learned this one somewhat off the cuff: many nights after The Year That Wasn't, Ianto soothed a PTSD-shaken Jack by singing this lullaby....). Also, his voice, while a warm baritenor, is nowhere as good as his PB's (and it's not exactly Bryn Terfel's either).

How I wish John Barrowman had done a cover of this particular lullaby...

Melou recognises the voice and has to resist the urge to roll his eyes. He considers slinking away before Jack sees him, but he's feeling too sulky to bother moving.

He'll pause in the mangled song, looking at her. "Is my cat-calling waking you up even more?" he asks, gently. She'll whimper, annoyed, stretching one little arm that has worked free of her wrappings.

That's when Jack glances in Melou's direction. "Can't sleep, either?" he asks.
