a bit of an overdue update...

24 - Star Trek - Better than expected; Zarchary Quinto was unnervingly Spockish, just don't think about the plot holes too much.

25 - Wanted - Silly to the point of ridiculous CGI-driven thriller about a secret society of assassins who are directed by the product of a mystical loom. Oh yeah.

26 - The Thomas Crown Affair - 70s classic with Steve ( Read more... )

We had the misfortune to watch Saving Private Ryan right after Band of Brothers, next to which it looks mawkish and Hollywood-ised. The first 30 mins are definitely great, though.

We also saw Harry Potter and the Onset of Puberty at the weekend, and I also enjoyed it. Having never read the books I've been liking the films more and more as they go along, and this was miles ahead of the first few films in the series, which feel cartoonish and cliched.

Other than that, Chinatown is great (the sequel The Two Jakes is nowhere near as good, but worth a look.) I liked Trek and Terminator lots despite their being equally stupid in the potting dept. Hated Wanted. I mean HATED it.

I agree that Saving Private Ryan goes downhill dramatically, which is all the more disappointing after the opening sequences which are stunningly powerful.

I struggled with Chinatown. And I say that as a fan of LA noir. But for some reason, I never managed to get into the film at all; I actually got a bit bored :-(

I wish I hated Wanted, but instead it reminded me of Jumper and others of that ilk; trying to be all crash-bang action and managing instead to be utterly ludicrous. I mean, with Morgan freeman and James McAvoy you could have expected something that wasn't completely and utterly stupid. Couldn't you?

I know what you mean about Chinatown being ve-eeery slow. I found it sort of mesmeric, though!

What I least liked about Wanted was how smug it was. It clearly thought it was the coolest thing on the planet. Also James McAvoy was somehow an unlikeable jerk.
