I have a Roku 2 XS and am thinking about upgrading to the Roku 3.
The credit card information is so that you can purchase channels (I bought one called Roksbox so that I can stream my video from my server to my TV) and games like Angry Birds. Go into the Channel Store and you will see what I am talking about.
I had heard that Youtube was not available on Roku. Yet, here it is (even though it is really bad).
I do understand the wanting-a-credit-card-to-make-future-purchases-friction-free.
But no-one ahead of time warned me that this was a requirement. I bought a Roku as a Christmas present last year, and gave it as a gift. I did not know that I was giving a "Gimme your F****** credit card number OR YOUR PRESENT IS WORTHLESS" present to my recipient. So now, I feel rather bad that I inflicted this on the person I gave the 'gift' to.
I have a Roku: When I went looking, there was no YouTube channel. I'm happy to hear there is one now. I'll go looking for it, now.
Currently, I use Twonky Beam from my phone to play YouTube videos over Roku. It's an odd over-interaction, but has been working when I need it.
I am, though, honestly so used to things asking me for credit-card information that I completely forgot that Roku had one for me. I can guarantee that my Roku account has an expired CC number now (I've been a user for a long time, and I have never purchased a channel).

I do like the variety of content being produced, that I can access through the Roku.
