1. Someone explained to me - I forget who - how XLR cables (microphone cables) got their name. The X stands for ground, L for left, and R for right. All these years I've been saying XLR and not knowing what it meant ( Read more... )

Gentle Folk suggests a different sort of music than the other names. Or is it supposed to be ironic?

I like the idea of starting with a band name and making music to match. I've been tempted sometimes.

I got the name from a Scottish ad. One of the fellows in Belle and Sebastian does a deejay night and in the ad it said he played 'gentle folk' (and turkish breakbeats or somethign weird like that). I like that it can be both a literal description of the music and a general description of a people. hooray!
