Maybe irresponsiblity is a growing problem?

"US Airways Group Inc. canceled hundreds of flights around Christmas when an unusually large number of flight attendants and baggage handlers failed to show up for work, crippling an operation already hampered by bad weather."I guess I was too busy during the holidays to hear about that. But wow, people called in sick and ditched work and caused ( Read more... )

It's plain selfishness. US Airways is now asking some employees to volunteer this weekend because they can't afford to pay. Even the union can't help you if there is no more company for you to report to work to. All they think about is what is the immediate benefit for themselves. They don't give a rats ass about the people who are counting on them to perform their obligations and the affect it will have others. This is the attitude of people who will never get ahead in life and if they do, they will just fall right back down. This is one of the reasons why I hate unions. They don't encourage self advancement. It's perfect for people who don't like to be challenged.

I understand if a person needs a day off or whatever but yeah, sadly in this world people are very irresponsible and apathetic. Especially to those who need to go back home ON TIME so that they too can back to work, school, or whatever.

I remembered Tom told me an interesting story the other day. He use to work for an insurance company and one of the ladies in his department couldn't make it back to work on time because the flights were either delayed or cancelled. Interestingly enough they were very understanding still gave her a full pay for however long it took for her to get back home.

Just people watching at LAX I realized that the people that worked there are NOT very bright.

Dr. Laura Schlessinger on egotism: "Historically, one would more likely hear, 'Ask what you can do for your country,' today the slogans are, 'Yeah, but when do I get mine? You can't make me! I'm entitled! But I want it!'"

Yep. Pretty much sums it up.

I think the other thing is people also have that "I'm-too-good-for-this-job" type of attitude.

Apparently it's just that they don't think they're being paid enough (I heard all employees got a pay cut). And if US Airways has to ask people to VOLUNTEER their time, it seems obvious why. When you don't feel like you're being paid enough for the work you do, your morale goes way down. I understand where you're coming from when you say that's totally greedy, but when you have a family to support in a plummeting economy where EVERYTHING nowadays is expensive as hell and new jobs are treasures hard to come by, it gets pretty stressful. ^^

Yeah true, however planning a "everyone take sick day without notice" during one of the busiest seasons ever isn't going to make things better especially if the airline is on the verge of being bankrupt. They were forced to take a pay cut due to the company being in the red. If anything if I were the US airways employees, I would have started looking for work elsewhere in a more stable company.
