Erica only has to spend a day in the clinic with Madeline, her perfect, very strong lunged baby girl. Ten fingers, ten toes, a wonderful eater, and now Erica's in her own bed, sitting up against the headboard cradling an awake for the moment newborn. The dogs come panting back in, heading straight to the water bowl, because John made sure to run them thoroughly. He comes into the bedroom a minute later, wiping his sweaty face on the bottom of a shirt that's not much drier. He leans carefully over, so as not to touch Erica with anything besides his lips, and kisses her.

"How're my girls?" He looks down at them both, with a soft expression.

"Wonderful," she smiles. "Perfect. And awake. Very awake."

Maddie takes that opportunity to grunt and stretch her legs, tiny feet flexing.

"Okay," Erica smiles at him. And when he disappears, she gets up carefully with the baby.

"Let's get daddy's surprise dinner ready, Madeline."

It's just room service in the kitchen, but Erica wheels it in one handed and lights a candle on the tray. Under the silver domes are two steak dinners. It is Valentine's Day, after all.
