They meet in the library, surrounded by the musty smell of leather-bound books and reverential silence. Reaching for the same shelf, hands brushing in midair.
“Oh, pardon me,” Belle says with a warm smile.
“So sorry,” Aerith says with a gesture for Belle to continue.
Their eyes meet, and there’s something there, something they can’t describe. An instant kinship, a deep-rooted understanding. A connection.
They shift a little closer, although neither seems aware of the movement. The hems of their dresses brush against each other, and they shiver delicately and their eyes don’t look away.
It’s not to be.
Aerith is home, finally, and there is so much work to be done to restore Hollow Bastion to its former glory.
Belle is free, finally, and she can feel the Beast’s presence nearby and soon she’ll return to his castle.
Aerith loves her world. Belle loves the Beast.
It’s not to be.
And so they part, fingers dwelling on each other’s hands just a touch longer than necessary.
The connection, though, still burns between them, time and distance never enough to extinguish its flame.
They write to each other, long and loving letters, relying on magic and faith to spirit their words between worlds. Sharing hopes and dreams, trials and revelations, secrets written in a language only they understand.
If Aerith is a little distracted and dreamy after receiving a letter, Leon and Yuffie and Cloud and Cid let her be, knowing her dedication to their cause, never questioning her.
If Belle is a little flighty and restless after receiving a letter, the Beast will just smile and hold her hand and understand her and never judge.
If their words are little wistful, if they’re filled with yearning and fantasy and what might have been, neither lets it hurt them. Words are power, and words are passion, and their connection flares bright every time they place pen to paper.
