The door creaks as Sora pushes against it, his whole weight behind the movement, feet sliding against the ground. Riku’s fingers are curled around the door’s edge from the other side, and Sora thinks about reaching out for them, grasping them tight, hoping he’ll still be able to feel the heat of Riku’s skin through their gloves.
But then Riku’s hand is withdrawing, the gap between the doors growing smaller as they work together, grunting with effort.
It’s probably for the best. If he’d felt Riku’s fingers against his own, Sora’s not sure he’d ever be able to let go.
He glances up just in time to catch Riku’s gaze, those impossibly bright blue eyes staring back at him fondly, and Sora swallows, throat dry and raw. There’s a small smile on Riku’s lips, at once wistful and hopeful, and then the door is closing, sealing the barrier between them, and the Keyblade thrums at Sora’s side, ready to turn the lock.
There’s a sting behind Sora’s eyelids, and he wants to shout and slam his fists against the door, but he won’t.
There’ll always be a door to the light.
He will find Riku again.
There’s no force in this world or any other that can keep them apart for long, and Sora feels warmth spreading through his chest, a tickle across the back of his neck that feels like the memory of Riku’s breath.
This is an ending, yes, but also a beginning, and Sora takes a deep breath, feeling that familiar surge of power as it rushes through the Keyblade.
He watches the door disappear in a twinkle of light, like stardust swirling out on the wind. His love for Riku settles in his heart, the same place he kept Kairi safe, and Sora’s hands ball into fists, ready for the journey ahead, ready to find Riku and bring him home, ready to be together once again.
