Are you surprised by this? I wasn't aware that there was much science education going on. This idea seems to be supported by the number of universities that are closing physics and chemistry departments.

No, I'm not the slightest bit surprised. I had to show one of my GCSE biology teachers a photo of a snake's skeleton before she'd believe they were vertebrates...
That is really bad news. The fact that some (all?) species of snakes have vestigial limb buds might, one would hope, suggest that snakes are indeed vertebrates. I suppose he thought they were a type of worm.
