Im not trying to start anything because generaly I like reading your thoughts, but about the cruise thing - Sure, first world pay to have those people take care of them for a week but the waitor on our first cruise was from a third world country and he said that he was the happiest he had ever been because of the fact that he was making more money than anyone from where he was from and he could send that money back to his family. He never once made it seem as though he was being oppressed. Im not saying that they arent cheap labor force because Im sure that they are, I was just pointing out that most of the people working on cruise ships are from third world countries and they love the money they are making.
Hey, I'm not trying to start anything either, and I appreciate your unargumentative comment :)
Yeah, you raise a good point about the other side of the cruise ship argument, and a lot of people view the sweatshop issue in the same way. It does give underprivileged people opportunities (not to mention the working environment and the nature of the work is nothing like a sweatshop anyway). If they're having fun, then it's not as bad; I just happen to read about all the bad stuff about the industry, haha. I guess there's a reason the cruise industry didn't catch the same heat that Nike or the Gap did years ago, and/or that the people on cruise ships have never organized any sort of strike. Also, I had the same experience on my first cruise - the people are really wonderful and upbeat. I feel sorry for all the rude people they probably have to put up with!
Yes, I totally agree. I dont like sweatshops but I guess that when I think of a cruise ship and all of the underprivileged people working on it, I dont think of the environment of a sweatshop. I was however in awe of how some of those people can work there. They work on the ship for about 6 - 9 months at a time, and can only get off every once in awhile. Im not sure I would like that but if it works for those people and to them they are making more money, well more power to them.
I also feel sorry for the rude people that they have to deal with sometimes. Some people can be so horrible just because they have money. :o(
