If there was one thing that Toph could detect was if someone was lying. Not only through feeling vibrations in the earth, but also through the sound of a person’s voice. The way the nerves overwhelm a person when they lie is unmistakable, whether it’s a sudden pitch of their voice or a momentary stutter. Toph was the human lie detector, and everyone hated her for it.

Prince Zuko found out about Toph’s uncanny ability the hard way as he wasn’t present during Jet’s crazy revelation. His first lie was small, if not endearing; luckily, the reason for his deceit seemed permissible, and so, the Blind Bandit decided not to call out on his lie in front of crowd but rather waited for both of them to be alone so they could discuss it.

The context of his fib was odd and quite surprising. It had escaped Zuko as he so defiantly defended himself during an argument the young Water Tribe boy loved to bring up: the Prince’s non-existent love-life. Questioning Zuko’s reputation with the fairer sex was fine; however, bringing in another member of the group during the argument was unimaginable.

It was mid-debate that Sokka argued, “I could careless if Your Majesty goes off to bed some girl as long as it’s not my sister.”

At once Zuko froze as Katara yelled a disapproving “Sokka!” Toph furrowed her brow in mischief and interfered at once.

“You gonna let him talk to you that way, Fire Boy?” The blind girl smirked. “Look at him slandering your name. You and Miss Sunshine. Ha! That’d be the day, am I right?” she laughed and elbowed the Prince’s tense side, hearing Sokka grunting in front of her.

“Y-yeah,” Zuko muttered quickly before repeating it in a louder and stronger tone. “It’ll be a cold day in hell before Katara and I even think of being more than just allies.”

Sokka furrowed his brow before laughing at the absurdity of such a thing. Katara harrumphed and walked away indignantly, taking Aang with her.

Toph just smiled to herself. Zuko Zuko Zuko.

It wasn’t long before Sokka decided to go hunting, leaving Toph and Zuko to their own business.

“So,” Toph began and giggled at the sudden realization that Zuko liked Katara.

“What?”

The Blind Bandit calmed herself and walked over to the Prince, taking a seat next to him. “I know it’s unfair to tell you this now, but-” she broke out laughing and felt Zuko's muscles tighten in anger next to her. “Okay,” she breathed. “It’s out of my system now.”

Zuko grunted in irritation and crossed his arms, waiting.

“I can tell when people lie.”

The Prince raised his brow in confusion. “…Okay.”

“No no no, you don’t understand,” she said, smiling brightly and feeling accomplished. “This includes you. I can tell when you’re lying.” She giggled, sensing Zuko beginning to shift his weight in obvious discomfort. “A cold day in hell indeed,” Toph added at last, raising her brow.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Zuko argued and stood up.

“But I do,” she said rebelliously and crossed her arms.

“So what are you going to do?” the Prince asked furiously. “Blackmail me?”

“Don’t get your panties in a bunch, Lover Boy. I’m not going to blackmail you. I just wanted to let you know that I know your little secret now.” She scoffed. “It all makes sense now- the way you talk to her and the way that you conveniently get near her. You’re pretty smooth for a Firebender. Who knew?”

Toph felt the Prince’s heart rate increase. “Don’t worry,” she said cheerfully and jumped up. “No one will ever know about your secret.” She gave him a strong pat on the back, causing him to stumble forward. “Doesn’t it feel good having it all out in the open?”

Zuko growled. “I hate you.”
