A while back, he would not have felt anything toward the girl after turning against her. She was not of his concern-she was just a pawn in his way of capturing the Avatar. He’d admit that she was attractive (nothing compared to the beauties of his homeland, though) and that she was a worthy opponent. He respected her, but nothing more.
So it came as a great surprise that after speaking to her in that cave, he had to think awfully hard about his decision. His Uncle was a big influence on him, yes, but the girl had added more pressure though she was no longer present.
After he turned on the Avatar and his Uncle he had felt like the scum of the earth, and the Waterbender’s hurt expression did not help. I thought you changed! she had screamed with eyes full of anger and resentment. I have changed, he had convinced himself and swore that he would prove that to her soon enough.
Months passed and he was able to escape Azula and her minions with the help of his Uncle; and began to search for the Avatar for an entire different purpose now. He wanted to become one of them-he wanted to prove to that girl he was good. So when he found them in an Earth Kingdom village, he knew it was time.
So he begged; and he bowed his head, exposing his neck to his former enemies like animals would in a truce. He offered his services as a Firebending Instructor and won them over after telling them that he would sign his name in blood if he had to. But the girl wasn’t convinced, and it would be weeks before the Final Battle before she even considered his good intentions to be true.
“I don’t know if I should trust you,” she had told him one night. “It’s like the cave all over again. I’m afraid to put my faith in you and then be stabbed in the back when you’re faced with your father.”
“I understand,” the prince answered and left it at that, hoping to make her proud when the time came.
“Be careful out there,” she told him outside of the Fire Nation palace. “Don’t let him hurt you. Remember: you’re not weak. …At least not in my eyes.”
He had smiled, and hesitantly hugged her before running inside-he didn’t look back.
They won, and there was a feast in their honor where women came up to him and flirted and told him he was handsome though he knew that their praise didn’t come from their heart, just their mouths.
Then Katara came and she hugged him fiercely, and kissed his cheek. “I’m so proud,” she had whispered and held his hands. “Thank you. Thank you.” He smiled, and laughed, and became guilt free.
And it was good.

I used a lot of 'ands'-- I think it's annoying. Oh well, haha.
