Sloth - The Little Things
He was a thief, a murderer, a criminal, a scoundrel, a swindler… Mugen was a lot of things, really. But one thing he wasn’t was a gentleman. No, good manners and right conduct, after all, didn’t matter in the Ryukyu Islands. The Ryukyuan mothers were always more inclined to teach their children to stab an enemy with a knife rather than to offer their seats to old women and ladies. Indeed, gentlemen had no place in Ryukyu.
Japan, though, was a different matter altogether. Anyone who wasn’t a gentleman there was frowned upon by the ladies and snubbed by the men. But their snobby attitudes never affected him. The more offended they were by his presence, the happier he was. Also, he knew he could kill them all with just one swipe of his sword if he wanted to. So once again, he didn’t find it necessary to try to be a gentleman. It was a waste of time and effort, really. So when he met Jin, who was all prim and proper - the perfect gentleman, he couldn’t help but scoff at the guy’s futile suffering.
But then again, at least Jin’s gentlemanly manner saved him from Fuu’s incessant nagging whenever she needed something. Fuu would ask him first, nag him to get her comb or to carry the groceries. She’d always ask for something mundane - something insignificant that he would always be too lazy to do. And he’d always say no. They’d banter over it, their voices rising far above their usual volumes. And eventually, Jin would get up and do whatever it was that Fuu asked prior to the fight. Whether he did it because he really was a gentleman or he just wanted them to shut up, Mugen never did find out. He supposed it was a mixture of these two reasons, but mostly because Jin was a gentleman. Another thing that Mugen wondered about was why Fuu would never just ask Jin directly for her little favors. It would certainly benefit them all if she did. But somehow, she never seemed willing to just accept that he was a sloth and that he wasn’t a gentleman at all.
Yes, Jin was a perfect gentleman. He wasn’t lazy at all and he catered to all of Fuu’s little whims, even when he wasn’t asked. And Fuu would always look up at the samurai with wide admiring eyes and shyly thank him. Mugen was thankful towards Jin too because the guy always spared him from being a lackey, but at the same time, he couldn’t help but feel indignant at Fuu’s lack of gratitude towards him. Didn’t he deserve a ‘thank you’ too? Or at the very least, shouldn’t she stop looking at him with barely suppressed rage and disgust? So what if he wasn’t there for her when she needed her comb fetched or her bag carried. He’d surely be there for her when it mattered the most. What did it matter if he was too lazy to do her little favors? He’d lay down his life for her without a second thought if the situation called for it. Didn’t that count for something or was he just not enough?
