"I need to return to Earth," Optimus said gently, holding Elita One in his arms. He wished he did not have to let go, he wished he could lay aside the burden of leading the Autobots against the Decepticons.
His wishes were immaterial. It didn't matter he had just found his beloved again. He had his duty to the Autobots and Earth.
"I know," Elita replied, and she pressed a kiss to his mask. "There is still too much work for us to do, Optimus."
Those simple words ignited something in him. He looked into her optics and saw not a trace of resentment at his leaving so soon after their reunion. Only love, and he realized what it was that burned in his chest once more.
