Rain moved his body so that he was standing right in front of Junki’s bed, somewhat shielding him from the harsh lights of the cameras. He held his hand up, his eyes burning with a rage he hadn't felt in years. Hyori looked a bit shaken as she turned away, her countenance defeated and almost broken. As if setting off a hair trigger the reporters went into rotation shouting off question after question:
"Word on the street is that there is a new drug out that is killing young males, what is your take on this chief!?"
"The person behind you, what is your relationship with him?"
"Your wife set this whole thing up, what do you have to say about that chief?"
"Your sexuality has come into question, chief, are you or aren't you a homosexual?"
"Does your department have anything to do with this new drug, if it is true, what are your thoughts on it?"
"A lot of young males are getting hospitalized; do you have any idea why?"
Rain held his hand up, the expression on his face thunderous. The reporter’s hushed immediately, but they also looked anxious as if at any moment they were going to go in at him again.
"I'm in mourning right now, so I will not answer any questions at this time, me or anyone else from my department. I don't know who told you I was here, or how anyone even knew, but if my wife is indeed behind this, then it is a private affair between me and her. I'll be holding a press conference at some point to address this issue; do hold all questions until then. For the moment I implore that you leave me alone, this was my friend, he is deceased for Christ's sake, have some fucking respect!"
It didn't look like they were going to do any such thing, but Rain wasn't the Chief of Police for nothing. He pushed every one of them bodily from the room and told the hospital staff to make sure that they were gone by the time he left, even if they had to call for back up. Rain was a mess right now, he didn't have the time or the patience to deal with any nosy ass reporters. Otherwise he would probably pull out his gun and started shooting everyone around him.
Hyori was standing over Junki's bedside, having moved there while Rain was pushing everyone else out the room. She was thinking: how could someone look beautiful even in death? It made her realize why her husband wouldn't stop seeing him after they had gotten married, even to the point of not even trying to keep him a secret or hide him from her. Hyori reached her hand out to grab the start of the sheet that was currently pulled up to his chest; however Rain halted her movement by grabbing her wrist.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?"
"I want to see,"
"What do you know about this?" Rain cut her off, his tone was grave, weighed down by every sad emotion there was. Junki was gone and he was almost certain his wife had played a part in it, and just knowing that made him sick enough to his stomach to throw up. Rain once again found him-self thinking wearily how he could have been so blind and stupid? Hyori looked at him.
"I'm sorry, I didn't think... I didn't think it would get to this point. I just wanted him gone, but I don't think I wanted it to be like this."
"What do you know?" Rain asked again. He was looking at her now and as he said this he pulled the sheet back to show her the results of Junki's failed cesarean section. Hyori turned away from it, her hands flying up to cover her mouth as her stomach flipped. She collapsed to her knees and began to dry sob. Rain silently pulled the sheet back up, covering Junki's face with it.
"I want a divorce, and I'm placing you under arrest for suspicion of murder. You may be able to make a plea bargain if you tell them everything you know about whatever this drug is, who's behind and so on. After this is all over, I don't ever want to see you again, do you understand?"
The tears streamed down Hyori's face as she nodded. Her role in this sinister game was over, she had lost, and she had lost more than just Jihoon, so much more. Had it been worth it? Hyori thought as Rain took out his cell phone to call for back up. No.
Junsu had fallen asleep a while ago, but Yoochun hadn't wanted to leave his boyfriend's side just yet. He'd sent Yunho a text message telling him it was going to be a while, but he had yet to hear from the other man. It wasn't like Yunho to ignore his phone calls, especially with them being on such an important case and as a result a bad feeling had settled into his gut, making him a bit paranoid.
His cell rung and he quickly answered it, believing it to be Yunho.
"Yoochun, it's me, Rain."
"Chief," Yoochun sat up. "Is something wrong?"
"What isn't?" Rain answered, but quickly went on. "Yunho isn't answering his phone, is he with you?"
"No, I'm in the hospital, my boyfriend fainted, I was going to meet up with Yunho later. Did you find out anything?"
There was a short pause: "Come to my room, I'll explain everything to you when you get here." Rain told him his room number then hung up on him.
Yoochun just sat on the hospital bed for a second, dumbfounded, before he stood up and looked down at Junsu's sleeping face, his features morose.
"I'll be back Junsu-ah, until then, sleep well." He kissed his forehead and left the room.
Hyori was sitting down on the chair beside Junki's bed now, her head down and her hair covering her frozen features. Yoochun was perplexed as to why Rain's wife was in the room, or who the covered man was on the bed. He suddenly felt heavy and looked at Rain for clarification.
"The case has taken a sudden deadly turn, rather quickly." Rain tilted his head towards Hyori. "My wife here is a witness, and perhaps the biggest witness we're going to get at this point in the case. I want you to take her down to the station and don't let her out of your sight for even one second, as far as I know someone on the inside is in on this, so we can't trust anyone."
"Someone on the inside, you mean an officer is behind this?"
"I'm almost certain an officer is behind this Yoochun."
Yoochun looked winded. "I don't have my car sir, I let officer Hangeng borrow it I was going to take the bus down--"
"No good, do you know when you'll be able to get in touch with Yunho? I can only trust the two of you at the moment with something this important."
"He hasn't been answering his phone for me either," Rain cursed.
"Then wait for me, but get her out of my fucking sight, I can't stand to be in the same room with her. The coroner will be here soon, I just need some time."
Yoochun looked back at Hyori whose hands were now covering her face, her small shoulders shaking. He pulled out his handcuffs. Yoochun didn't want to do this, but if she was more than just a simple witness he didn't want to risk her changing her mind and making a run for it. Yoochun approached her and without being asked she held her hands out and he snapped the handcuffs on her wrists from the front.
"Who is the coroner coming for sir?" Rain didn't answer; he didn't really think he could. Yoochun decided it would be for the best to give the other man the privacy he wanted. He took Hyori by the elbow and led her out. Once out in the hall Hyori slammed her back up against the wall and started a tantrum so bizarre that the few people out in the hallway looked at her like she had gone crazy.
"Hey, hey, what are you doing?" Yoochun was wondering if Rain's wife had gone temporarily insane. Hyori leaned the back of her head up against the wall and glanced over at Yoochun with red-rimmed eyes.
"Are you ready for this one, cop?" She asked before looking away. "That guy in there under those sheets was my husband's lover, and I'm one of the reasons why he's dead."
Rain had a lover, wait... Rain was gay? And his wife killed his lover? Yoochun felt as if he were being mind-raped. "You do understand what you're saying right; you're saying you had someone killed."
"I know what I'm saying cop," Hyori looked back at him, her eyes hard.
"I'm the reason why he's dead. I did it to get back at my husband for all his years of infidelity." She then laughed. "But you know what the funny thing is? I wasn't mad at Jihoon because he was cheating on me, I've cheated on him in the past as well, I was mad because he loved him more, way more than he ever loved me."
Hyori brought her hands up to cover her face and cried. Yoochun wanted to hug her, but forcefully stopped him-self and looked away.
Minho pulled into the parking lot of Taemin's University amid a blaze of flashing lights and a hoard of people. He jumped out of his car and ran up to the front of the entrance as they were pulling Taemin out of the building on a stretcher.
"Taemin! Taemin!" Minho turned to one of the paramedic's. "What happened?" The man didn't answer him, just continued to push forward until they reached the ambulance where he asked:
"Do you have any relation to the patient?"
Minho wanted to tell him that he was Taemin's boyfriend, but instead he said that he was he was a close friend and also an officer.
"I'll follow behind you in my car, is--is he going to be alright?"
"He just fainted, nothing to worry about." The man answered before turning away from Minho and climbing into the ambulance. Minho looked on as the doors closed shut and then turned and ran back to his car. If he hadn't been sure that Taemin was pregnant before, he was almost certain now.
Minho climbed back behind the wheel of his car, honking at the people in his way to move so he could get through. Taemin-ah, I'm on my way, I won't leave your side again, wait for me.
Kyuhyun made it to Changmin's house first, only because he had left first. Yunho and Jaejoong weren't far behind and Kyuhyun was actually surprised that Yunho hadn't run into the back of his car with how fast he had been driving. Jaejoong walked ahead of the both of them, Yunho rushing to catch up with him as they knocked on Changmin's apartment door, only for him not to answer.
Yunho made to break the door down, but Kyuhyun pulled out a key, not looking Jaejoong in the eyes. "We kind of lived together for a little while; I... kept the key just in case we got back together."
He opened the door and they crowded the short hallway calling out Changmin's name. Kyuhyun went to check the bathroom, while Jaejoong and Yunho went to the bedroom where they found Changmin passed out on his bed. Jaejoong rushed over to him, Yunho not too far behind, who called out to Kyuhyun.
"Yunho!" Jaejoong cried when he saw the blood on Changmin's blue sheets. He had slit his wrists and had possibly been using the bed sheets to staunch the blood flow before he fainted. Jaejoong was pulling Changmin into him, while Yunho stood over them, his face ashen as he called for an ambulance.
"Try to stop the blood Jaejoong," He ordered just as Kyuhyun came into the room, pausing when he saw Changmin limp and hugged close to Jaejoong's chest.
"Is he...?" Kyuhyun could barely get it out.
"The ambulance is on its way; let me check to see if he has a heartbeat." Jaejoong didn't want to let Changmin go, his fingers gripping the others shirt like a lifeline, but Yunho managed to coax Jaejoong into letting Changmin go enough for him to press his ear to his chest. "I think he's just unconscious, his heartbeat is a bit faint but it's there... Changmin-ah..."
Yunho’s voice was suddenly choked up with an emotion he couldn't name. Changmin wasn't just Jaejoong's surrogate son, he was his as well. How could this drug have gotten so out of hand like this, to the point that even someone with a will as strong as Changmin's could want to end it all?
"This is my entire fault," Kyuhyun whispered as he took a step closer to the bed. Jaejoong was busy wrapping the bloody sheets around Changmin's wrists, his expression dark. Yunho looked over at him. "I didn't know why Changmin suddenly broke up with me, but after a while I just decided to give him his space. I guess he gave up because I did--"
"Don't blame yourself, how were you to know that it would get to this point?" Yunho scolded. "Tell him how you feel when he can hear you, OK?"
Kyuhyun nodded, he then went over to the bed to sit down reaching out to touch one of Changmin's wrapped hands, silently promising Changmin that he would do just that.
"So what do you think?" Donghae asked Kibum as the two of them walked around the police station, looking for those that may be afflicted with 'Bourne'. Yunho told them to only reveal what they knew if they were sure, but at the moment Donghae hadn't found anyone else that he thought might be.
Kibum was looking down at the ground, his face a bit pale. It still seemed very unbelievable, but after seeing Heechul's stomach and then what everyone else relayed, it looked as if he’d just walked into a living nightmare.
"I still don't know how to feel about this, I mean only hours ago I didn't think it was possible for another man to get pregnant. Then on top of that to be told that you could die, it's just a bit too much. To tell you the truth Donghae-ah, I think I'm still in shock. I don't know what to do or what to say."
"It's not like it's your fault Kibum-ie, I mean you... ah..." He blushed. "I guess this is my doing. If the drug is here, I'd had to have gotten it into my system someway or other, don't beat yourself up over this."
"How can you take this so lightly?" Kibum asked, halting and forcing Donghae to stop with him. "Your life is in danger, I mean, I don't know if I can do this by myself." And by that he meant take care of their child alone if Donghae didn't make it out of the delivery room. Donghae bit his bottom lip and looked away. It wasn’t like he wasn't taking it seriously; it was more like he was trying to remain positive if only to prevent him-self from becoming hopelessly depressed.
Donghae continued on down the hallway, feeling a bit sick. He was possibly going to give birth to a baby he would never lay eyes on. It was all finally settling in. Donghae pushed the restroom door open, stopping in his tracks at the blood he saw in the sink and then the body lying across the floor.
"Oh dear," Hyejeong gasped as she turned away from the TV, which showed Rain telling a group of reporters to respect his privacy. Hyejeong stood from the couch and went into the kitchen where her husband Tablo was standing, drinking a glass of orange juice and looking incredibly stone-faced. "Honey, did you just hear, your police chief was just on the news. Apparently a lot of young men have been fainting lately, and they say some of them have even died."
Tablo placed his glass of orange juice down carefully on the counter before looking over at her. "No, I did not know that. Do they know why?"
"Um... no, they say it's under investigation. It's really alarming don't you think, it could be an epidemic or something, you should be careful." Tablo walked past her, and she turned with him wondering if she had said the wrong thing. Tablo made his way down their hallway and into his room where he closed the door behind him and looked up to see Mithra sitting on his bed.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"I just came from seeing Lee Junki; your great plan is slowly un-raveling."
"I wouldn't be so sure about that... so another person has died, huh?"
"Yes," Mithra stood from the bed, Tablo's eyes narrowed. "Is there anyone else?"
Mithra looked off into the distance, his eyes sad. Tablo walked over to his phone on the dresser and looked through his call list to see that he had missed calls from both Hyunjoong and In Young as well as a text message from Hyori. He looked to see if Mithra was still there, but the other man was gone. Tablo read Hyori's text message first, which was just two words: I lose. Tablo's brow furrowed. What the hell did that even mean? He called Hyunjoong back.
"Where the hell were you?" The other man sounded frantic. "I've been trying to call you all morning."
"I had my phone off and I was in the shower, why, is something wrong?"
"In Young got caught putting the drug in the coffee, I told you that stupid whore would be no good. His name is Yeseob, twenty-one, and he’s not even a fucking rookie, still in school, does paperwork. What the hell do we do with him?"
"What do you want to do with him?" Tablo asked instead looking over toward his bedroom door, voice casual as if they were merely talking about the weather. Hyunjoong let out a stuttered breath.
"I don't know, threaten him?"
"Kill him," there was a pregnant pause. "Did you not hear me, I said kill him. We can't afford for him to go blabbing this early in the game."
"Fuck this game, you're crazy, killing him is not going to work, he'll easily be traced back to us, its suicide!"
"When did you become such a spineless wimp Hyunjoong? You should have thought about that before you agreed to help me out with this, we already have blood on our hands, what difference will a little more make?"
"I... I can't,"
"Then have Taecyeon do it, I'm sure he wouldn't mind. Do you have the list?"
"What?"
Tablo walked over to his door and pulled it open, his wife jumping. Hyejeong had been in the process of knocking on it.
"I... breakfast is ready."
"I'll call you back," Tablo said quickly before ending the call and moving toward his rather shaken wife to put his arm around her waist. "Let us eat then, I'm starving."
Dongwoo looked up, the worried expression on his face shifting as he recognized the man walking toward him, to that of anger. He stood up to meet the other halfway and pushed his chest.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"I came to see if Sungjong was alright, did you think I wasn't going to come just because you told me not to."
"I don't want you here Hoya!"
"I have just as much right to be here as you do!"
They stood glaring at each other before Dongwoo looked away and went back over to sit down, placing his head in his hands. Hoya just watched him, waiting for him to explain what the hell was going on and why Sungjong was in the hospital.
"He tried to kill him-self," Dongwoo said as if reading Hoya's thoughts.
"I found him on the bathroom floor, he had slit his wrists."
Hoya didn't really know what to think, but he knew that he had to sit down. He stared at the floor in disbelief. Sungjong, his sunny, diva-ish boyfriend had tried to kill him-self? It didn't make any sense.
"Do you know why?" Hoya asked.
"No, but they say he's alright, I'd gotten to him just time. They're running tests on him right now."
"I saw a bunch of reporters outside," Hoya revealed suddenly making Dongwoo look at him in confusion. He couldn't remember seeing any reporters, but that had been because he was carrying a dying Sungjong in his arms, his mind focused solely on getting the younger man some help.
"They were asking me a bunch of weird questions, like did I know about a new drug that was causing a string of young males to need to be hospitalized."
"A drug," Dongwoo questioned. "Sungjong-ie doesn't do drugs."
"I know that, but..." Hoya trailed off wondering if he should reveal to Dongwoo what he knew. Sungkyu had told him this in confidence, most likely because he knew Hoya could keep a secret, but this was a secret that he never would have expected to hear in a million years, one that had him looking at Sungjong in a whole new, more revealing light.
"Well," Dongwoo urged him on. Hoya opened his mouth, and then closed it. Dongwoo was looking a bit irritated now. "Are you going to tell me or not, if it has something to do with Sungjong-ie, I think I have just as much right to know as you do."
("He said he's been having suicidal thoughts, that the pain has been unbearable. One time I caught him in the kitchen looking at our knives like he was debating on whether he should use one of them or not. I don't even keep them around anymore...")
"I think I may know why Sungjong-ie-ah tried to kill him-self."
Hyunjoong closed his phone and glowered in Taecyeon an In Young’s direction. He was beyond pissed off at the stupid woman, Hyunjoong was fucking heated. Because of her idiotic mistake a person was going to have to lose his life, and not by the result of 'Bourne' either, but by his own hands. He took out his gun, Taecyeon looking a bit excited as he saw it, gleaming and held below Hyunjoong's waist.
It would have been too risky to keep him at the police station so they had smuggled him out of the back and took him to Hyunjoong's place seeing as how he lived alone, In Young had a boyfriend and Taecyeon a room-mate. He told Taecyeon to open the door, in which he did, and Yeseob was revealed, tied to a chair and looking scared shitless.
Taecyeon removed the gag from his mouth:
"We know you saw In Young-noona, so make this easy for yourself and just admit it."
"I told you, I didn't see anything!"
"Then why were you in such a rush to leave the room?" Taecyeon countered leaning into his face. Hyunjoong pointed the gun at him, and Yeseob's eyes widened and filled with shallow tears.
"We don’t have time for the question and answer game; I know you saw her it's written all over your face, so, before I kill you, why don't you give her a big thank you, her ignorant mistake has cost you your life."
"Hey, that isn't fair; no one was supposed to be there!"
"He does fucking busy work you worthless slut," Hyunjoong sneered at her. A furious blush took over In Young's cheeks and she stormed out of the room slamming the door behind her.
"Are you really going to kill him here, someone might hear the gun go off and alert the police." Taecyeon reasoned. It wasn't like he didn't want the sneaking mole to die; he just didn't want anyone to hear it. Hyunjoong tilted his head to the side his expression blank as he cocked the gun in his hand, pulling back on the trigger.
"Fool, we are the police."
Yeseob choked on a sob at hearing that, before turning his head to the side and closing his eyes.
