I was trying to tie my shoes. Not looking, just pulling and pulling, until I noticed I was pulling on a hole rather than a lace.

It might be time to do the unthinkable, and ... procure new footgear.

I tend to keep shoes until they start hurting.

I haven't. Do you have it on SLSK, and in what folder if so? I just downloaded Sunday Pasta in music form, actually, and I've been enjoying it. And my shoes really did hurt quite badly. They've been described by a medical professional as "lacerated". Because medical professionals assess footwear all the time.
