I used to carefully disguise my kids' names and even my own, but I've gotten lazy about it. I've been on LJ since 2001 and have never had a problem. I'm ready to be more careful if I ever feel the need, though.
The person who got in trouble was being read by hundreds of people so it's a completely different situation. Still, I'd be careful mentioning students' names. Just seems like you could still express yourself sufficiently without the worry.
