Time for "Seasonal Songs of the 70s & 80s" once again! SPRING! (pt. 2)

Apr 09, 2008 16:13

Throughout the past year, I have posted my own calculations of the Top 20 songs from 20 years, for various seasons. Summer, fall, and winter can be found on my public journal if you're interested. (Calculations based on Billboard Top 40 charts, not personal opinion!)

All that's left is:

SPRING!
Top 20 songs of spring (March 1 to, but not including, Memorial Day), part 2: 1980s: )

In the span of two weeks, owners of the Xbox Live Arcade version of Pac-Man will be locked in a free-for-all battle for the top spot on the Pac-Man leaderboards, and the top finalists from around the world will be flown to New York City to compete in the finals for the honor of being crowned Pac-Man World Champion by the game's creator, Toru Iwatani.

Shit, it's a whole comment post for one song... crankycatlady April 9 2008, 22:51:59 UTC
1980: Another Brick In The Wall. Definitely reminds me of early June, just one week before graduation. I had never been in trouble before, but my English teacher suddenly decided to make a huge deal over the fact that I was often a couple minutes late ( ... )

1983. Come On Eileen is one of my all-time favorite songs. It reminds me of floral-scented runs I'd take in the evening in Eugene. I'd never seen the spring evening sun shine so beautifully and such vibrantly colored flowers. That song was on my "running" tape that'd be playing on my Walkman. It always put me in a good mood. Whenever I get a whiff of "Oregon springtime" I think of that song ( ... )

Agreed--in fact, Spring 83 had some of the coolest music, out all at one time, of the whole decade. That was my favorite semester in college, too, so I have very happy memories of this music. Most nostalgic ones are, besides "Eileen": "Der Kommissar", "You Are", "Let's Dance", and, of course "She Blinded me With Science", which seems to be one of those songs nobody dislikes.

We thought we were awesome with those Madonna bow things in our hair.

PHOTOS?!?!?!

1985. Don't You Forget About Me. Made me sad, because I had a lot of friends graduating that year.

I DID graduate that year, and in fact this song was #1 the very week after I graduated. Very poignant to a bunch of us who'd just been thrown out into the "real world".

1987. Livin on a Prayer.Reminds me of a big ice storm we had, where we were shut in for several days, and just happened to have a big bag of "420". I remember watching a bunch of music videos in said condition (when MTV et al actually still showed music ( ... )

Thomas Dolby's entire output, beyond "Blinded Me w/ Science" is worth looking into. SMART lyrics, great synthesis, and a true worldliness. His father was a diplomat and he'd lived all over the world during his childhood. His stuff ages so well. I went to see him last year at a small venue here in NH (the Tupelo in Londonderry) and it was one of the best live shows ever. He kept it lively by adding a horn section...a great trio called the Jazz Mafia Horns. Well worth checking out!

Re: "Don't You Forget About Me", I had a ton of pals graduating that year, too (a year after I graduated from high school). Very, very bittersweet. Sheesh, did that song get too much airplay...

Generally, though, my 80s listening habits were a little off-kilter. The Tubes, Lene Lovich, the aforementioned Dolby, Todd Rundgren and Utopia, and a huge amount of Jazz Fusion. I wasn't exactly keeping up with my peers on the pop culture front...
