Mod Post: Q&A

1. How many people can claim a character? One person can claim a character or pairing at a time. However, if you're interested in doing a collaboration, you could sign up jointly with another person. The collab team only has to write 7 fics.

2. My character pairing has already been claimed! What do I do? If the original claim is in quarantine you can claim it. If it’s not in quarantine you can sign up to be waitlisted or choose another claim. If you choose to be waitlisted, you will be contacted about your claim once the person has finished the seven fics. Waitlisting is on a first-come-first-serve basis.

3. Can I claim more than one character/pairing at a time? You can only claim a second character/pairing once you’ve completed your first set. However, this does not mean you can’t claim a reverse 7 spells card seeing as the two aren’t connected. You can read more about the reverse challenge in rule 17

4. Can I claim a crossover/original character? No.

5. If I pick a pairing, does every piece have to have that pairing in it? Not explicitly, but you should at least allude to it.

6. If I pick a single character, can I write fics with him/her in a pairing? Yes. As long as your claim character is one of the main characters of the story, you're good to go.

7. How are you going to know if I've already written like, a kajillion Harry/Draco fics and then claim H/D here? I'm not, and honestly, I don't care. If you really want to add to the pile, go for it.

8. Can I repost old (by "old" I mean completed before the date you requested to join) fanfiction for the prompts? No. If I find out somehow that you've done it, I'll delete the post. But then again, I'm not going to be arsed to comb your journal to see if it's been posted before.

9. Can I edit/reassign prompts for previously posted fics? Sure. Just go back to your post, click "Edit Post" and switch out the prompt.

10. Can I claim a group of characters (e.g. the Marauders, the Trio, Slytherins, the Founders, etc) or an era? Certainly.

11. How long to the fics have to be? At least 100 words, but they can be as long as you want.

12. What ratings/types of fic are allowed? G through NC-17, and anything you can think of, from fluff to deathfic.

13. Are there any deadlines? Not really. However there are changes in the community so a claim can no longer be held “hostage” for years and years. You can read more about this in the new rule 18 about quarantine

14. Can I post fics that I've written for this elsewhere? Repost wherever you want as long as it’s not written before signing up here.

15. Can I use fics I've written for other challenges? Yes, as long as it fits into the specification of "new fic," which is, you wrote it after you claimed your character(s) here.

16. How central does the prompt have to be to the fic? Don't stress it. Use it as inspiration or for an added dimension. Hell, just stick a random prompt onto a fic. I won't be able to tell.

17. What are the rules in the reverse challenge? You can only have one active reverse card, only when you finish or drop the card can you claim another one. There is no maximum claims a prompt can have, so the same prompt can be claimed more than once, and even filled with the same characters/pairings.

18. What is quarantine? To avoid the community going under because of inactivity once a pairing/character is claimed there will now be a quarantine. What does this mean to you once you’ve claimed something? Nothing if you fill your claims in a fashionable time. If your claim list stays untouched for 2 years you will be contacted and moved to the quarantine, which means your claim is in limbo until you’ve made contact, if I don’t hear back from you and your claim list is still untouched in 4 years it will be removed. If you’re interested in reclaiming the pairing/character you’re free to do so as long as nobody else has claimed it. Yes, while you’re in quarantine others can claim your pairing/character.
