Now on with the story…

Darkness was all around him. Floating in a valley of despair. No way out. Barty Couch Junior was trapped in a place of his own making.

Barty paced back and forth, feeling as though he was about to trip over something. “What happened to me? Where am I?”

Images floated by. Images of his father, mother flashed before his eyes. His induction into Voldemort’s circle. His father’s murder. A dementor loomed over him, reaching for him and an intense cold feeling ran over his body and straight down to his bottom of his spine.

“I was soul sucked,” Barty realised. ‘So what am I? Just a soul floating in nothingness? Can I get out of here? What happened to my body?’

More images flashed before him and Barty saw his body, not under his control anymore, walk into a cell at Azkaban and sit in a corner. A man in a brown suit leaned over his body and looked at him, intently. The man’s lips moved but Barty couldn’t hear what he was saying. The angle at which the man was standing, meant that Barty couldn’t see the man’s face clearly.

“I look like I’m sleepwalking.” Barty commented dryly. His eyes widened as the man in the brown suit reached into his suit, pulled out a wand and pointed it at Barty‘s prone form. “No!” Barty yelled, as a bright light suddenly shone down, blinding him as he looked up.

All of his bravado was stripped away and he had reverted to the scared young boy he once was. He realised this and backed away from the light as if it was burning him. “No, I won’t go!” he yelled, backing towards a solid wall that had suddenly sprung up, trapping him. He stood pressed against the wall and hoped the light wouldn’t get him. The light engulfed him and Barty screamed in a mixture of shock and pain. It was as if a hook had grabbed him around the stomach and pulled hard.

Barty blinked, as a feeling of disorientation crashed over him. The bright light shone in his eyes again and Barty tiredly waved it away, as he closed his eyes again. His arm hit something solid and Barty’s eyes flew open.

A dark shape swam into focus and Barty found himself looking into the warm brown eyes of the man he saw, leaning over his body. The rest of the man’s face was a big blur and Barty found it was hard to focus onto the man‘s face. “Who are you?” he managed, cursing himself for sounding so hoarse.

“That’s not important,” the man spoke, his voice sounding distorted. “The important thing is, you have your soul back in your body.”

The eyes swam before Barty’s vision and he had to shut his eyes to make the world stop spinning. “Why did you do this?” he asked, cursing himself for sounding like a boy of ten years old. He opened his eyes again and looked at the eyes, which had thankfully stopped moving.

“Never mind that,” the man said, his eyes crinkled up in a smile. “The dizziness will pass. You‘ll be feeling better any moment now.” he commented, as his features swam into focus. A face that Barty recognised but couldn‘t put a name to, just yet. “You!”

The man stood up and grinned at him, flashing his straight white teeth. “Yes, it’s me. Now you’re a good kid really and it’s such a shame you fell in with the wrong crowd. Now, you have a second chance, don’t blow it,” the man ordered, his voice sounding more in focus. “I don’t usually give second chances so you should feel special.” he turned and walked away. “Oh and you’ll be collected soon so I better go. See you around.” The man stopped and looked around at Barty. “Oh, and one more thing, you’re quite welcome,” he said, anticipating Barty’s yet unspoken thanks. There was a sound of a door opening and then the man had vanished, leaving Barty slumped against the wall.

“Why did you restore me?” Barty muttered to the empty cell as a wave of remorse swept over him. “What else did you do to me?” Barty sighed and let his head flop forward onto his knees and remained there until he heard the door open.
