Essay: Dealing with canon in the Lily/James relationship

Jun 28, 2006 14:56

I’m calling this an essay, because, to me, a rant is more spur-of-the-moment and angry. I’ve given a lot of thought to this subject and I ended up writing this, wanting to fight some of the clichés that have somehow wormed their way into the L/J fanfiction and made people accept them as canon, when they most obviously aren’t. Also dealing with Dark ( Read more... )

Great essay - posting worthy for sure, but you might want to fix those LJ tags when you can. :)

Thanks, vea. Gah, it was only one misplaced space that ruined it all. It's fixed now.

See ya,

Hate when that happens. But yeah, some interesting points you made between fandom and canon. The only thing I would say is that you can sometimes make pretty safe inferences from canon, which is, I suppose, similar to fanon, only perhaps not as prevalent.

You made some great points and I especially agree with the fact that the 'James was really handsome and every girl wanted to shag him, etc.' thing is fanon and one of the things that bother me the most about fanfiction. When I first read about James in SS, I thought dork immediately (glasses, messy hair=dork for me) and I love dorks, but they aren't the hottest boys in school, you know.

It was a good read and thanks for posting it.

that was really good!
one thing I've always wanted to know is, do Head Girl and Boy get a separate dormitory? I see it in SO many fics, but i've never read about it in the books (not that i remember anyway). Canon or fanon?
anyway, thanks for posting that. Very interesting =]

Oh, I had forgotten to address that! It's fanon all the way. I'll add it to the list. Thanks!

Glad you enjoyed reading. :)

Although it is nice to think that there was a seperate dorm for the Head Boy and Girl, I personally think it's unlikely... although I have used it on occasion when a classroom just won't do. Despite my occasional use I really don't think the school would have allowed a seperate dorm/common room/bathroom (and anything else you want to think of) for one boy and one girl to share, for obvious reasons. Just take the girls staircase as a direction pointer *shruggs* Just a view.

But a brillient, rant/essay :D

I agree. Just meant to say that, well, the use of a Head dorm is no reason to burn a writer at the stake :D

Thank you for reading, and I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

wow! That was so well thought out. I agree with alot of what you said. I really hate stories with Lily or James cheating on each other. I read one where in the end Lily decided she was in love with Sirius but already pregnant with James' child. I was so pissed off that I wasted my time reading it.

Anyway, great rant.
