Expect some nasty angst before the end though ; D The Mujina is a creature from Japanese foklore, I'll explain more in the next chapter.

I love the setting of this story! Could it perhaps be related to the infamous Minamata disease that left so many people sick? And is our monster here... one of them?

BINGO! Minamata disaster has a big importance in the story, "our monster" though... Well, I'm always about to reveal too much about the plot, so I'll leave it there ^.^

I'm curious, did you know about the disease beforehand? I had to search for a disaster that would fit here, I honestly had never heard about it before writing this.

I think I came across it once or twice in some English-language books about Japanese history. Given the scope of the disaster, I'm honestly quite surprised that it isn't as talked about as it should be - after all, it's a landmark case for toxic waste management - but this IS the Japanese government we're talking about. They tend to downplay too much. :P
