Haku tugged at the hem of his skirt, wishing the drab, olive grey uniform dress was long enough to cover his knees. He knew full well he should be running to the safety and relative warmth of his dorm room (or alternately, the stifling heat, if Gaara and his arsenal of space heaters were around to have say in the matter) before he caught a cold. He could have been inside a half-hour ago, thawing himself out and tending to the small, blistered burn on the palm of his left hand. He huffed, frowning at the bulky bandage that kept him from pulling on his glove. After three similar burns in just under two weeks, one would think his managers would know better than to let him anywhere near the diner's kitchen.
A snowflake caught on his eyelashes and he blinked it away. The snow was most of the reason he was still outside, perched carefully on the backrest part of an icy bench, snow boots planted firmly on the seat where his butt was meant to go. There was just the lightest dusting of powder coming down, just enough to cover the omnipresent dirt and sludge with a deceptively thin layer of clean white.
Haku snuggled down deeper into his white woolen pea coat as a chilly breeze swept past him. The thought of a hot shower, a chance to wash away his faded makeup and the smell of bacon grease, was a delicious one. He couldn't help thinking that the longer he stayed out in the cold, the better getting warm would feel later. Delayed gratification had its perks.
