I think perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of being a writer is all the people that you meet who also think they are writers. I am reading a book on gaining confidence in my writing right now, (the book is also full of quite wonderful little writing excercises as well) and I find myself amused at a few of the ideas proposed on the ( Read more... )

This is why I often try to nod and smile and be pleasant to my many friends who consider themselves writers, but are actually security guards, bank tellers, elementary school teachers, etc. They WANT to be a writer, but they really don't understand that it requires approximately the same amount of luck that it takes to be a hollywood star.

The sad part is some of them have real talent, but no drive to actually write, and some of them have plenty of pages written, but have no talent. Very few have both. And even they are still working day jobs.
